The logging railway on the Olympic Peninsula was run by Rayonier, but with all the merging of timber companies that took place in that era, they may well have been connected.

Rick, thank you so much for this video, you did a great job. I've never seen The Loop as 1:1, either live or vicariously by camera as you gave us. The only time I've seen anything like you gave us was the HO model in the basement of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum about 35 years ago. Bucket List Entry...!!!!!!

That's the one I am thinking about, but prior to Rayonier ownership.

Finally found the map I had stashed on a thumb drive. The line I was thinking about somewhat paralleled the old Rayonier/Polson operation, but was a few miles to the east. Rayonier ran south from the Strait at Hoko. The other was south from Sekiu. The latter was not MacMillan-Bloedel as I thought, but was Bloedel-Donovan Lumber. Guess that makes me half correct.

Ken and PGE,

Can you find any other videos on the Mac-Blo?

Hytec, glad you liked it. I don't know who took the video just glad they downloaded to You Tube. I enjoyed it as I've always wanted to ride a Santa Fe or Southern Pacific, passenger train over the loop. I just happened on the scene about twenty five years to late.

Here's another Zachary Larsen, video. Other then the scenery you might think you were somewhere back east.

One of my favorite railroads is the D&RGW.

Here's a teaser as shot by Emery Gulash.

All this nostalgia is great. Here's one. I love the sound of old F units and Geeps:

Ah, yes. The much treasured Pentrex three part MILW set. A staple of any Lines West fan's video library. In the first part, as they follow the train to Lewistown, there is an error. They refer to it as Train 801. But as this was filmed in 1973, that is incorrect. The train followed is 163. It did not become 801 until December 1, 1974. Thankfully the Pentrex set has just about fewest errors of them all.

I keep forgetting to answer this. Yes. There were several on operation in that area. I didn't follow up with them, as scenes seemed to be rather redundant.

Ken, Ok! Not that it would make any difference as I more then likely wouldn't recognize the duplication.

Socalrails, made this video.

Thinking this was taken during the Mike Haverty's, Santa Fe Presidency. Some where east of Barstow, Ca.

Nice to see SF units which are really silver and red. Not messed up with re-stencils, and not pink!

SP Action

For the Southern Pacific Railroad, rail fans in our midst. The history of this next video can be found by clicking on You Tube. I could swear Pentrex put out a video out with similar footage. Pretty sure there was more then one photographer filming the action.

This should answer the following questions:
Did SP ever use the Daylight Livery, GS4 types to pull their mail trains?
Did they ever use a Santa Fe type dome car?
Did the GS4's have white trim on the drivers?
Did they ever use GS types painted in the black livery?
Were all the commute cars the same paint scheme and lettering?
Did the Cab Forwards have a large SP lettering on the tenders?
Did the cabooses have the large SP lettering just under the cupola?

Did the ....I'll bet you can think of others this video answers.

It would depend on the era.

So do I. You could have a piece of mail put on the eastbound mail train in Atascadero, Ca., and it would be ready for drop off in Gilroy, Ca., and it would arrive in time to go out, before the Post Office closed in Hollister, Ca.. By far better service back when, then we have today.

A dear and very close friend of ours was a postmaster. She showed me some of the brain dead paperwork they have to file. And I got to watch over her shoulder as a bunch of useless suits spent time bothering her, checking for dust in corners and other mindless BS. I guess they'd needed jobs or something. (Should have been flipping burgers somehwere or mopping floors.) She put in over 30 years, and intended to go 35. But she bailed sooner, as she could no longer stand it. Her replacement was a guy I went to school with, and he didn't last, as he had zero patience for the mindless bureaucratic garbage. He went back to manning a window selling stamps.

The post office has attracted some mindless suits, all in the name of QA but having just the opposite effect.

Here's a self sponsored Southern Pacific film. I'm sure I've seen this posted here and may have posted it on another thread... before but can't find it. Pretty sure it isn't in this series. Since we are railfanning anywhere west...here it is.

Listen if you will to the verbiage used here. This is railroad men talking about their railroad.

I've seen a chopped up version of that SP film. But never in full length like this one.

This is an interesting commentary on the Rock Island Railroad and the industries it served. One question. What happened to these industries and why? I know the answer but thought the youngsters here might want to contemplate and take a look at it. From the writer's perspective Rock Island was set to meet the demands of the future. One can ask, why then did it end up in such dire straights? There is more then one thing working here but the ugly head of reality rose up and showed it's ugly side.

For the era modeler there is a lot to gain from watching this video.

What did you think?

I have a Western Pacific video that actually talks about what happened to the industries it served in Oakland, Ca.. It does on to tell why many of them left California to find other lucrative and profitable places, to mass produce their products. If I can find it on You Tube I will bring it here.
