Ken, I believe it was one day. As a kid I wondered what it would be like to ride the Western Pacific, California Zephyr. It never happened. As a matter of fact with a family of Santa Fe Rails, not once did I end up riding a Santa Fe Passenger Train. One school outing riding the SP mail train from Salinas to Gilroy, CA., and that's it. Well, enough tears and sobbing:crying:. I can't change the past. Upside this video comes close to a virtual ride from Portola to Davis, CA., on the Old Western Pacific. Ahh the ole Harlowton to Logan run and the beautiful Musselshell River valley! In another life I was a fly fishing guide for a gentleman in Three Forks. His 'lodge' was built by his mother (he's well into his 80s) back when as a railroad hotel with lodgings for rail employees. As much as I enjoyed riding the Northcoast Limited back when I really wish I could have ridden through Sixteen Mile Canyon or Homestake Pass (we always got off in Bozeman). An ole classmate of mine at MSU his grandfather was a conductor on the 'Road' as well.

The lumber line had been working the area until it was almost stark (not a green minded statement). It was a perfect location for a dam and yes, you are correct. The Oro Dam, gosh I keep thinking the name should be different but yes. A dammed project went in and the ROW for the lumber company is now under water. This involved a project to relocate the W.P. Tracks. Pretty much all the logging railroads have played out and it's all handled by logging trucks.

You could put a piece of mail on the SP's, Westbound mail train, coming out of Los Angeles, Ca., at Atascadero, Ca., ............ and providing someone from the Hollister Post Offices was there to pick it up.... And I think you can put it together correctly based on the above information. I should be taken out to the wood shed. Of course it's full of trains so that wouldn't be a punishment. Grin.
