That's it I've had all I can take. This is just to much for me. I can 't stand it anymore. You are all hired to do my next project "The Beet Train". That feels better...glad I got that off my chest. All of you have done some great work on your cars. That Anise seed in my opinion reflects the large sugar beets and the smaller celery seeds the sweet potato's that shipped in a similar fashion. Nice work! You could mix the two seeds as sugar beets don't come in one standard size. The last I heard, sugar beet trains still leave Indio, CA., headed E. into Arizona, to sugar plants I'm not sure if the Tracy plant is still open. Bettaravia, Ca set the standard for sugar plants. Not only did the extract sugar but they took what was left and turned it into feed for cattle and porkies and the rest of it was used for commercial manure. The smell was atrocious and when the plant closed down, it was the first time the surrounding community was able to smell fresh air... off the ocean. Pretty much reminded me of an open air water reclamation plant. Not much fun.
Jerry , I din't remember exactly , but I know I did add something to take up almost all the space , maybe a foam block or plastic false floor . These needed more weight as well , at that time I was using steel BB's which I most likely Krazy glued to the origional floor .
I think I may be reloading mine now that I am seeing how much better the celery seed loads look . Mine look like 6 loads T Rex poop in comparison .
Digging through the decals I found some old Woodland Scenic dry transfers I had and had enough to do one car in the Holly Sugar relettering job like the photo Espeeman posted a little ways back. Started the weathering, and will get a photo posted in the next couple days. It has been hectic around here lately!
Heres some shots of the "beets". loaded, being shoved over Cajon. beets at Mojave, east [/quote] Ha, All I see is locomotives! where's the beets?....dave
Beet racks Great job on the modeling guys. The best size might be halfway between the large and the small seeds, IIRC the beets were mixed size and dirty looking, more like the natural seed color than the reddish tint but I could be wrong cause I'm a foamer, not a farmer! Last time I was at Feather River rail museum(Portola) there was at least one old SP beet car there if anyone wants to see one in person...dave
Reversing the top panels really gave the car the look I wanted. I can't wait to finish up this whole train!
All thats left really is weathering the wheels and load her up! Everyone was sleeping so I figured I would just keep working on it and get the photos on the layout.
Ah, beets! I too have memories of Manteca, that unique smell of fermenting beet pulp and cattle dung. I was not unhappy when that feedlot next to the freeway interchange closed. Do you plan to build a loader, JD? The rusting remains of one is right off highway 101 near the highway 156 junction near Hollister, CA. Quite close to Betabel road - Sugar Beet in Spanish. There's another with less graffiti in San Ardo, CA. Those cars look great, by the way.
hey, wasn't there a song from 'the searchers' ? it went something like : sweets for my sweet, sugar beets for jerry.... ;-) ok..i was just trying to be funny...
