What a cool video! It's been interesting watching this project grow. Are you planning any structures to go with the the cars? Not to shill our products...but our Bay Window will be out in a month in SP markings so you'll be able to add to your fleet. I have some first shot plastic that I've been painting and decaling and it's good to retire those Walthers and ER Bay Windows finally. Anyway, good work... Cheers Joe MTL
Thanks for the comments everyone! I am really thinking of going for a 40 car train now. It is a heavy train, with the seed loads, even if just at the top, so 40 would be a good size. 4 or 5 diesels should handle it pretty well. Joe, no structures planned....yet. I am sure a MT SP Baywindow or two will be hanging onto the rear of the Beet train. Athearns SP Baywindows look good two, with the free standing grabs. Are the MT cabooses going to have generator belt chargers on the trucks?
These look great. Do you still have them running? I'm looking at creating a table top layout for myself sort of similar to this. Any suggestions? What decals did you use? I'm looking at maybe 15 cars. Any where you can recommend to buy them in bulk from? Thanks.
I haven't seen them in bulk. Try Ebay, train shows, some of the venders here. The last Demi kits I got were from EBay.
Here's the train today DE....still want more though.
That's a great scene. Quite an impressive beet train, too! The sound track is something else, with Steve Perry belting out notes and a dog trying to keep pace with him...
Intermountain bought the Dimi (and Tichy, same stuff different name) Trains line and have offered the sugar beet cars painted and assembled. According to Intermountains site, they currently offer 6 different road numbers for the car as well as the car in several other road names.
Got it. Thanks. Missed it when I paged down. The other road names are listed as wood chip cars. I suppose I could use the WP cars, but I don't think they were in sugar beet country. I just remember SP beet cars/trains along the coast line. I'm guessing the Tidewater Southern handled beet cars as it had trackage into the Spreckles #2 plant in Manteca along with SP. Hmmm. WP was a parent of TS so maybe... After all it is my railroad.
Actually, Tichy sold kits to Dimi Trains, but they still own the molds and whatnot. Now they sell the parts to IM who has them assembled and painted. You can buy kits direct from Tichy. Microscale also has decals for SP beet cars, if you want to roll your own. I would body mount 1015 couplers and use BLMA trucks if I were building a fleet of these.
I found a couple of cars at a local swap meet this weekend. Any suggestions on what works putting them together? What glue did you use? did you have to weigh the cars to get to run properly? Suggestions would be great please.
Liquid stryene glue, like Testors will work. Weight is a tricky issue. Gonna run them loaded or empty? Loaded, put some lead or something on the bottom. Empty, not sure. Maybe a piece of brass sheet and paint it to match the car.
I"ll try your ideas. Thanks. placed an order online for 5 intermountain cars and got 15% off. Already painted and have microtrains trucks and couplers. just have to change the decals and weather them. Any suggestions on how to remove or replace decals? I've ordered the microscale ones. changing up the cars will add some randomness to the train.
