Thanks for the pics, in2tech. The seam is there but it’s not obvious so I think it’s acceptable. The lake diorama looks pretty good and is a nice way to practice new materials and techniques. You can use lichen or clump foliage to make banks for the lake. Before you cut the still water make a paper template. I use the paper that’s sold with moving boxes to fill empty spaces. The sheets are big enough for just about any task. Trim the paper until it fits where you want the water, parking lot or any other feature to go. If you cut it wrong you can throw it away and try again with a new sheet. When you have it to the right size use scotch tape to hold it to the bottom of the plastic sheet, then cut along the paper template with a scissor. You can use paper templates for cutting foam core, construction paper, foam sheets or whatever.
Also the plastic sheets were on a small piece of Black 2mm foam, and not the entire size of the plastic sheets, and gravity sort of made them lean towards the ends. But either way, for most scenes it should not be an issue. I am going to try a small diorama with two sheets, at some point, just to see.
@country joe and others, this is a test of TWO plastic "Still Water" sheets together. Next time I go to Hobby Lobby, Walmart, Michaels, I will get BLACK foam board. The White when I cut it shows too much and ruins the scene, and the Black kind of fades into the scene. Of course other scenery could be used too, just am not at that point yet. Just a quick test for the seams of "Still Water". You can not see the seams at normal viewing. BTW, one of my peeps fell out of a canoe Time for some glue. Click It
That water looks great! Shave down the inside banks of the bends in the creek, and keep the outer banks of bends steep. Centrifugal force within flowing water creates beaches on the inner banks of bends (by depositing sediments where the water slows), and bluffs on the outer banks (by eroding the bank where the water speeds up.)
For sure! A great minimal skill option for water creation. After seeing this, gonna have to fit a pond, stream, lake or river somewhere...
Mentioned minimal because its a plus for people like me who have very low level modeling skills. Wasn't thinking about adding water until your posts.!
Me too, great for people like us. Even IF someone does the Realistic, Epoxy, etc... route they might want to add a very simple fishing pond, lake, river, to their layout with this stuff. I did buy the Realistic Water, simple test did not go well, so going to wait on that. The thing I do like about that stuff is you can see rocks, tree branches etc... under the water when it dries clear. Curious how @BNSF FAN's pour goes. Not really sure how to add that to the "Still Water" scene yet. Still playing around with it. I think today is the time to try and cut a piece of plastic water. Hope it goes well, but I have a bunch of it now TBH I'm just having FUN at the moment.
Not a great picture but that pour was over the weekend and this is how it looks today. Remember, I added a murky tint to the water so that is part of the cloudiness but it will probably clear a tad more before it's completely dry. At this point it's not tacky but it's still not 100% dry either
Good luck with the cutting and having fun is key. Got me thinking... Wondering if frozen water can be modeled by placing white foam core underneath the sheet. Or maybe 2-3 sheets stacked with or without the foam core? Wow, that came out real nice.. The little murkiness adds to realism.
I have White 2mm foam, test coming up soon And I have TWO I can stack on top of each other also. Will test sometime tonight. And that's why it is better then plastic water Looks awesome. What are the BLACK spots?
@Mark Ricci Her you go Of course once gain the cell camera picks up things the eye can't Click It One sheet on White Two sheets on White
I think I see the seam in the second photo but I’m not sure. Based on your photos I think using multiple sheets to create a larger lake or river would work very well. Unfortunately, I don’t think it looks like a frozen lake, however it might look better in person.
Alright here is the CUT plastic "Still Water", worked out pretty well. Used big scissors to cut it, trimmed it with the small ones. Next time I will use the small scissors to cut it all You have to be very careful not to break it But it works. At least for this size. Cut it a little larger then you want and trim it. I like that I can Raise the water now to a different height, pretty cool this cheap stuff. For some projects. Of course Realist, Epoxy, etc... looks the best Click It
Thank you for the test. Agree with you and @country joe about the look... Glad to see the cutting went OK.
The bay looks great, in2tech, certainly good enough for me but I’m not a super realistic modeler. I think it’s my toy train (3 rail O gauge) heritage. Quick and easy methods to create a good looking stage for trains to run on works for me. You did really good with this.
Alright Glue Dot test for the JTT Still Water. I put one in the corner and attached it directly to my foam base and I can't even see where the dot is cause it CLEAR Now how it reacts to my 2mm black foam or paper is another question? Am not even sure exactly where I put the Glue Dot but's it's in that area And that one corner is NOT moving. And IF you paint your foam should be easy peasy, I think. Paper is going to cause an issue of course, me thinks. WARNING you could break your Still Water trying to remove it using Glue Dots! Ask me how I almost know, glad I only used one for a test. Took a tiny piece of foam up with it I mean tiny! The Glue Dot is in the Upper Left Corner, somewhere It worked really well. One sheet of 12 dots and it came with 272 or something. I'll never use them all, don't think. Kind of like a transfer thing you have to get used too. Here they are for my peeps, I keep the base piece on and trim them. You could remove the film entirely, but I like moving my peeps around. The actual Round Dot is what is under the JTT Still Water. And man do they stick. I you have to remove them you will need some Tweezers Alright next test a really, really small pond with the Still Water! Means I have to cut one up but I have like 6 extra.
