Why not have a thread where you can rail fan caricatures or miniatures of the 1X1 foot scale? Railfanning just for the sake of railfanning. I do this with my own train layout, as well as club layouts and train shows. Here is an example of what I'm talking about. Caution this is packaged with the idea of "Major Screwing Around". :uhoh: Don't be intimated by the professionalism. Let's get started. I know the sound drifts off and yes there are some negatives about watching this video. However, this ornery character has captured the essence of rail fanning. Whether it be the 1X1 foot scale, narrow gauge, model trains, toy trains which are in essence caricatures of the real deal. Let's see what you've been railfanning lately.
Ok...pushing to hard am I? LOL You know, railfanning a friends layout, your own as in watching the trains run by and/or catching other's while working a layout such as on Operations Night. I'm sure you can think of other ways to accomplish this. Recent visit to a railroad museum for example the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. A club's recent project now in action such as new track layed and trains negotiating it. I'm sure your imagination can take you from here to some unique video or to encourage you to make that video you've been putting off. I'm not the only one out there that would like to see it.
I know what you mean; Rick. I especially like "railfanning" my layout because it's modeled to represent the mid '60s, and watching videos of my layout takes me back in time, especially if the video is shot in "old time" mode, like a 8mm film, and shot either from a railfan's point of view, or from inside the train such as these: John
Oh yeah! That's what I'm talking about. Incidentally a group of us went over for Operations Night, last evening. Loads of fun. Thanks John.
He Enjoys What He's Doing Pretty obvious that he enjoys what he's doing. I read somewhere that he airs his videos over one of the local TV stations in Utah. Not sure what station, when or where but will be looking into it. I find him interesting. He pretty much expresses what most of feel and think about our interest in trains and the hobby in general.
Yes. He does do a good job. He doesn't seem to talk over peoples heads, either. More like he's having a casual conversation with us.
All the videos were great. Watching the Toy Man shots made me do some mental comparisons with Boxcab's picture of the PA in tow - the Alco looked dwarfed by modern diesels but the Big Boy dwarfed those in turn. John, the dome car video was great to have in b&w to feel more like the proper time, and in the cab-forward runby I like how the hitchhikers knew the best road to ride with!
Thanks, Eagle. BarstowRick has since taught me how to embed the video in the post lol. The reason for the "18 MPH" video is to show that I think this is a good speed for my mountainous layout. You're welcome, Rick. It was great having you guys over for Operations Night, and I'm already looking forward to the next one! One of my favorite videos of railfanning on my layout:
Thanks, Philip. Basically took a movie using a regular compact camera mounted on a flatcar pulled by a couple of locomotives, then found a picture of the inside of a dome car online, looking out. Filled in the window spaces with "green screen" color, then used Windows Movie Maker to merge the picture with the video. Takes a bit of practice but lots of fun to do!
Oop's you just caught me railfanning my train layout. From the Howland & Pacific Railroad. A N scale, slide show of a Union Pacific Heavy Weight Passenger Train. This train is made up of Ready To Run passenger cars. Oh you are so right! There's work to be done steps, window shades, figures, lettering, weathering and possibly lights. The observation car platform is begging to be tamed down, marker lights and a drumhead added. Scenery? As you can see my layout is a work in progress and needs loads of scenery.
Nice pictures! I'll have to come over soon, bring a lounge chair, beach umbrella, and camera...and railfan the H&P!
John, You'd be welcome anytime. Since there is little room inside the train shed for human types the beach umbrella and lounge chair may be a necessity. Portions of the layout are in demolition mode as I make some needed repairs to the hidden (at the moment not so hidden) staging yard. I'm also wanting to widen a curve topside and will be engineering that location today.:frustrated: Some modifications are needed with the CTV as I'm not happy with the results I got first time out. Then I can get back to railfanning my own layout.
After playing my video slideshow I noticed Jim's. Here we catch the guys on a operations night railfanniing his layout. Looks like the crew is enjoying the view from the front porch of the locomotive. Since the focus has been on the north west primarily Wyoming and the Union Pacific....why not? Ok, by now you should have a good idea of what we are talking about. I would like to rail fan your layouts through your camera's eye. We good?
Don't mind me if I rail fan the mail train arriving at the REA office.
Don't mind me if I rail fan Jerry DeBene's, double headed Southern Pacific Daylight. Must be a power move. Come to think of it we haven't heard from him in a while. And one more: Let's see, me thinks I'm having way to much fun. Hoping I'm not the only one. I'd like to see your favorite rail fanning video's, as you rail fan other's train layouts, visit a museum, or ride a live steamer.
Here is a link that will allow you to rail fan a number of Modules for various club layouts. http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?157287-Show-Us-Your-Modules&p=982590#post982590 Some awesome work being done and highlighted here on TrainBoard. To Josta for his video submissions, Ken for his commentary and not forgetting all other's who tuned in here thanks for your participation. It's time for me to get back to my model railroad and get some repairs and needed scenery done. Enjoy railfanning however you interpret it. Signing off....for now.
Ok, you guys can come out from hiding. I'm to old to be playing hide and seek. LOL You can ask me later what the ...well...I'm talking about. Signing off seldom last very long for me. Here is a bit of information even I didn't know. Toy Man Television, does it again. I'm impressed. Check this out. The ultimate in "Screwing Around". And there's more, if ye be interested.
Here is the more I was talking about. If this isn't Rail Fanning at it's best then I don't know what Rail Fanning is! Pop Quiz::teeth: Who is the Ultimate Model Railroader and knew how to Rail Fan his own Railroads? And don't give me the jibe and lip that model railroaders aren't rail fans.:uhoh:
