I'm really disappointed that he did not show a rear right quarter photo. It is hard for me to know how to bid without it.
So here's a counter (granted, a single data point) to the previous discussion within this thread about free shipping vs. getting a deal on combined shipping. I recently purchased two items on eBay from a seller I will not name. When I requested a total with combined shiping, the invoice I received put shipping both items for MORE than the sum of the two individual items! Knowing that the items did not need a Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate box (which was suddenly being quoted) I responded requesting that the shipping be reconsidered. The response that I got back was a terse reminder that my bid was a binding contract and that included the shipping charges. In other words, "too bad." I paid for the items-- more than I should have given the shipping charge-- the items were received in a flat rate padded envelope with a small PM box cut up inside to hold the items (which I think is technically illegal but I'm not sure), and the seller made about six bucks off me for the "combined" shipping. I have not figured out what feedback I will be leaving, but at least one other person has already dinged this seller with a negative for "Ripoff Shipping" and dropped his rating to below 97% which will give a number of potential buyers pause. (The seller has only a few recent sales.) So it can work both ways. I'll continue to consider Free Shipping since it's a known quantity. Fool me once...
You should take all the packaging including the PM box down to the post office and see what they have to say. I would leave a negative and report them to E Bay for over charging on shipping.
I would do the same! Let the PO know what's going on. That's fraud. I had a guy a few years ago charge me for Priority and then shipped it in a padded envelope via Media mail. I took the package down to the PO and explained to them what was going on. I then let them open it up at the counter so they could see for themselves. They took some notes and it wasn't long before the seller was kicked off eBay! I'm pretty sure he just opened another account under a new name but with the same mailing address and selling style.
I had a same similar scenario on here. I bought an Altas Classic GP 35 in GN from a guy that claimed it was test run only. Now this was back when the locos were new so I figured giving the length of time the loco had been released it could not have had that much run time on it. So I bid on it and won the item. Upon winning the item I asked the seller, since he was practically in my backyard if I could meet him somewhere to save on shipping? He informed me that the item MUST be shipped per Ebay rules. Upon recieving the item, which he charged me $7 for a small flat rate box, which he actually sent it parcel post of first class, I cant remeber which, and the shipping was like $2.50. Upon opening the item, I found that the wheels were so gunked up that I literally had to take the trucks apart and scrape the dirt off of them. Turns out the chasis was from an Atlas/Kato GP 35 and NOT the Atlas Classic version like the seller described. Of course I tanked him on feedback AFTER he left feedback for me. To make matters worse, my Dad bought an item from the same seller recently and wouldn't you know it, the item was NOT what was described in the posting.
Biggest shipping issues I had was when I was stationed overseas. Mostly with the iSold it stores. When I'd ask if they would ship to an APO address, they'd ask what it was first, then come back with sure, but will be something like $15 more because I'm overseas. Too bad the APO address is either in California or Baltimore...last time I checked, both are in the US. So asking why the extra charge, they would reply with its was inconvenient for them to fill out the customs forms at the post office to mail me a package.
Reading all of this is helping me as a seller actually. I ship everything USPS Priority or flat rate priority, but I make that clear in my description. The other thing I do is try to set a start up bid that is sane. In most cases, my attitude is, I want to sell this, make more room and hopefully the person who wins it gets more enjoyment out of it. It's not uncommon for me to start bids on MT both stock and even some of my custom at $5.00. Sound fair? Items that I know are not 100% I start lower and try to describe what I see. Case in point, I'm selling a Deluxe Innovations Santa Fe Roadrailer set. I know it is used, I know it is missing a rear truck. Do you think $25.00 is a good starting point? I'm not looking at e-Bay to get rich, just to help with my hobby budget.
I think $25 will get it a lot of action. If I have something that I know is really good (like a brand new, never run Kato Bethgon set for example), I try to price it at a price that I know will probably only get 1 or 2 bids but I figure, 1 bid is enough, right? On other things, I will set it a little low and see where the market takes the price. Sometimes good, sometimes not. Andy Tetsu Uma
The humor may be that it was shipped priority. The last update on usps was on the 9th. 11 expected delivery and no update since. Am I getting smacked for begging?
I can't stand the Post Office tracking!! Lot of times, an item will arrive before the tracking information shows it arriving in Denver! Based on some of my past dealings. Mileage may vary. And if I ship something, I send tracking information as well. But, I also state that item may arrive before Post Office tracking is updated. Just a way I CMA with shipping. Granted, I also have not sold in ages! And, after a couple of vanishing packages, I also automatically include Delivery Confirmation and Insurance. I usually eat that cost though, for peace of mind. Again, personal experiences. Mileage may vary.
The USPS tracking often leaves gaps. Which makes any value of that system minimal too many times. Then when it shows delivered three days after the actual event. Or like one box I sent last year, was delivered to a wrong address nowhere near the real recipient and took a week for them to figure it out, after swearing it had been delivered. :frustrated:
Thanks gents. USPS, in my limited exp is pretty reliable. i'm hoping this sweet deal isn't my first bad exp. Not worried about getting my money and the seller was selling for a magazine (I think). I'm bummed, because I know i won't find one of these for 90 bucks again. I do have but priority is usually pretty fast. Really, I was just jumping back on the thread following up on the progress of my ebay purchase
Here's a guy overvaluing a bunch of old Bachmann and Model Power stuff by a factor of roughly 6-12. Over $800 value! http://www.ebay.com/itm/33-Model-Train-Cars-and-Engines-/180889461087
Here's just what I was looking for to complete my next scene! LOL http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-5-N-...142158?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item1e6e92ef4e
