I did manage to get that modeling in I was hoping to do last night. :) Going to get some in now too, early day! Last night I installed all of the BLMA fence, glued the gas tank down and added the burm, added piping at the top of the bridge in the background and more piping coming down the support. Going to add the fence supports later and finish the burm around the gas tank, and get the rest of the track ballasted and scenery done next to it.

Jerry, I know you are modeling Sunol and not Richmond, but in light of recent events out here, any plan for large black clouds of smoke and gunk hanging over this part of the layout? :teeth:

I saw that! I have some friends that work out there. Looked pretty bad. Last time I heard from my brother, about 4yrs ago, he was working out there too as an Iron Worker. You know, years ago when I worked for RJ Corman, I was working the Lima Refinery job inside the BP plant there. I huge fire broke out and it was one of the scariest things I ever saw. All I could think about was one of the tankcars or big round tanks on the ground just exploding. Dont ever want to be in that type of situation again. (A GP9 WILL do 35mph on 10mph track when it is operated by a frightened engineer. :))

I guess a refinery is no different than a NASA launch pad....if you see someone running, you pass him, then ask what's going on when he catches up to you.

When I worked at the Cape (late 50s - early 60s) nobody ran - we were taught to seek any cover we could find. When those missiles blew up they came down
in many little pieces, kinda like razor blades falling from the sky. We had a Thor/Delta rocket that did not program down range just kept climbing straight up, when the range safety officer pushed the destruct button it was directly over my head. I was under my TV van hoping/praying.

Here's the SD70ACe I have been working on. BLMA sunshades, mirrors, wipers, and some grabs on the nose. Painted the railings white and the MU hoses ends silver. There is a crew in there too, but you cant see them in this photo.
    10 days till ATN gets 4 of the 5 SD70ACe's for testing. Units 1201, 1202,1203, 1204, and 1205. :)

Very nice work there Jerry, yet another facet of the hobby I have yet to begin or master. At least I have you as an excellent role model!

Some quick shots of the little progress I've done lately. Got the tracks to the bridge ballasted, scenery on the hill and ground started, a new switch installation going into plant, (Mock) added, (Have to get tankcars in there someday), tarred burm around gas tank. Lots more to do, but slowly getting there. :)

Still going to add trees to this hill. BLMA fence still needs poles added too.

In regards to the SD70 project:

Do you stockpile your parts for the future or do get what you need with the engine purchase?

Since moving to Birmingham AL from Orlando FL (where I had a decent b&m shop), it seems everything is mail-order now (too bad I'm the type of guy that likes to hold things in my hands <lol>). It seems that most of the projects of that sort on MY bench are waiting either for parts, or for me to locate parts to order at either a reasonable price or quanity discount.

It always amaizes me how much you accomplish during the little free time you have away from the job, while I claim to be a man of leasure (but not nescessary of fincinacial resources <lol>), take forever to get anything completed on my layout.

It's been forever since I've railfanned the area you are modeling. What memories I have are sparse and yet every so often something triggers and I can see the same spot you are modeling. Kind of like a slow slide show. When the mental picture comes to me in black and white then I know it's a picture I've seen. Grin!

    Looking good!

Wayne, I do both. :) I have a large...but dwindling supply of Sunrise parts. When he told me he was going out of business I stocked up pretty heavy, and always buy on EBay or shows if I see them. I also have BLMA and Gold Metal parts. The SD70ACe project required ordering the BLMA sunshades as I didnt have anything that modern here. :)
