The FP45 units were repainted, as the Milw held them back from going to Amtrak. They were quite new. And went into freight service. Whereas the E units were well used.

    Peter-

    I understand this.

My point is that over the 55 years I've been alive, I have seen so many and varied depictions, including some that look very much like what UP claims, and seen prior to UP usage, that I find it hard to believe their version stands out enough to legitimately claim any copyright.

In fact, somewhere around here, I have some decals that look quite like those UP. From back at the USA BiCentennial! Even had them in my car window. Long before UP had their idea.

    :)

Thanks for the info on the E7. I wish I had a Westinghouse Quill! I may just commit heresy anyway. It will be a beautiful model And, I find the comments regarding the UP and the copyright on 'their' depiction of the American Flag most interesting. Surely that won't hold water.

    Kurt-

The Milwaukee Road having a large system, also had a bunch of name duplications. There was also a Monroe, Wisconsin.

Hello Boxcab! Thanks from my Detroit Tiger heart for the lovely reception the Mariners gave us last week. Meatloaf was right-2 outa 3 aint bad. A question on the FP45's. Did they blow up so early in life because they were geared for passenger use and couldn't handle the stress that frieght drags put on them? Or was EMD building junk? Your thoughts?

    -Thanks,
    Mark

Once they yanked 'em out of passenger service, they were re-geared to freight gearing, like a standard SD-45. They were used for awhile on system wide freights, but were a little hard on the curvature in the west, so they were kept back on the east end, then lack of maintence, combined with poor entry into the engine cabinet, and being a real diesel fuel hog when the 70's fuel crisis was around, and the crews didn't like 'em either.

Kurt has pretty much outlined it. Mainly just beat them to death.

Except I'm not certain about the curvature notion. Didn't the trucks on their era of SD45, and FP45, share the same basic frame, and axle spacings? (Yes. I know there are brake cylinder differences, but that is irrelevant to tracking problems.) Seems as though they'd have had troubles with other equal spaced three axle trucked units as well. And the four axle trucks on a Little Joe would certainly have been even harder in curves. Which they weren't.

Their FP45's roamed most of the system, at one time or another. In the late 1970's, they were often wandering across Iowa.

Thank you, gentlemen. Nice to know.

My cousin wandered around Iowa for a few years. It was too exciting for him, so he moved to Devils Lake.......

The NS day frieght just went by my office window, and that tells me it's time to go. The lead engine, of 3, was an old Conjob GP38 that has the PRR ownership label. They will be by my house in about two hours, after they stop at the quarry down the street, and the grain silos in Leslie, MI. Then it is on to the steel mill in Jackson. They come back up around 2 AM.

A side question-did ever see the Milwaukee lash up the FP45's to any of the U33C's?

    Mark-

Probably not. The U33C fleet, all four of them, were assigned to the Coast Division. Spent time on branches, etc. Did do road freight service. Such as DFEs. But, usually were turned back at Avery.

With the Milw trains comming and going in the dark of night in Tacoma you where lucky to see any movements just things like the slugs moving a train up the Tacoma Eastern going out to Morton or Centraila and maybe Grays Harbor.
Or the local job from Tacoma to Seattle so if it did move in daylight it was SW, GP,F's and near the end dash 2's

Most of the time, local work from Tacoma to Black River and Seattle, was at night. Hence the nickname for that job- "The Valley Owl." It was usually a GP9. Which was tied up behind the Kent depot during daylight.

Thank you very much. As I am modeling Wisconsin, I'll have to use some creative license....again.
