Just received three CCS Baggage and one RPO in PC. Still tryin' to piece together a PC passenger train. Also received a "box full" of custom-painted Mini Metal trucks. Some cool stuff !!!
On Craigslist, I bought a Minitrix 2-10-0 steamer with "extras" fir $80. The extras were 8 misc Atlas & Con Cor freight cars, 18 pcs of 11" radius Atlas sectionals, 18 pcs of 19" radius, 24 pcs of 5" straight plus 2 rerailers and a warren truss. Add an original MRC brass colored controller, and about 5 Pola buildings - 3 still wrapped - I think I did pretty good. Then got a lot of 5 Atlas #4 turnouts used from ebay for $36. Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk.
Yesterday, I bought via buy-it-now on "that" online auction site, an Atlas 1932ARA Standard boxcar, Erie. This particular prototype and model have some distinctive bodystyle features that will make this car look interesting in a train or in a string of cars being classified. The untypical features are the ends and the roof. The ends are “Buckeye” with six large corrugations. The car has a Viking roof, with panels that have small corrugations and big ribs where the panels meet. Prototype photo cropped from a public domain photo in Library of Congress: I wrote about this here on Trainboard in March 2012 when I was comparing N models and prototype freight cars. I didn’t know of any N scale model manufactured that has either of these two features, before the Atlas 1932ARA series. The AAR standard allowed railroads to pick ends, doors and roofs from various suppliers, so these are not a part of the standard. Some doors and ends and roofs are very typical at certain times, but not required in order to meet the standard. The buy-it-now listing on the website had a good clear photo of the side of the car but it did have any other pictures of the ends or sides, and did not give Atlas's catalog number of the model. I emailed the dealer WITH THE ABOVE PHOTO asking if it had these ends and roof. The dealer was kind enough to add a photo that showed them and answered my question. The dealer did not think Atlas had made cars with roadname-specific prototype details, but in fact Atlas produced these cars in five different bodystyle variations (different molds, not just different paint or add-on parts) through several releases. I thanked the dealer and "bought it now."
I recently bought two sets of Intermountain Great Northern FTs. Like how heavy they are and they are great runners. John
Just took the plunge into running some BN, early years, 1970-72 and added a new Kato SD-45 in BSB and two Atlas GP-7s in BN paint.
Four of the Atlas 89' flats. Nice looking cars, but I think some of the wheels are rubbing. Will have to look a little closer when I have some time.
Not really a purchase as it was a gift, but I finally received this from a family member. It was a birthday gift from way back in April! Smooth runner
Aloha, Decided to give "N" scale a try because lack of space limits my "O" gauge trains to a small loop. Looking around I found what I think is a great deal on 2 Bachmann McKinley Explorer Train Sets. These were $59.40 each set with free shipping (from Tower Hobbies) when I bought them! The set is up to $131.99 each today. I also bought the Bachman First Railroad Track Pack from Amazon.com. My plan is to build a small layout with a loop of "O" outside and a more complex "N" layout inside. My "O" stuff has been packed away for 2 years now and some of the engines were packed with batteries installed. Hope nothing leaked... Reading various post and forums I gather Bachmann is not considered the best out there, but if they run fairly quiet and don't derail on good track I'll be happy enough. Alaska is my road and I'd like the inside "N" layout to be a double track loop connecting to a out and back upper loop that will reverse the run. Alan
Welcome Alan, as for the out and back loop, you'll need to wire it as a reverse loop unlike "O" gauge Lionel. Just keep that in mind when you plan the N scale layout.
Nice to meet ya. True Bachmann tends to be on the bottom rung as far as their diesels go. But for an intro to the scale they should be ok. If they turn out to be crappy don't let it turn you off to N scale completely!
I scored my 50' steel express reefer on that auction site, plus a second one. See my "Express Desire" thread.
What you need to look for is whether there are black gears showing through the slots on the bottom of the trucks. Black is good, white is not.
I liked those Trainworx 85' flatcars so much... I received some of the Santa Fe and Trailer Train versions today... KUDOS to Trainworx on a nice model!!! I was thinking of getting some of the Rock Island ones... but Trainworx did them on the wrong body style (should have been straight sill not fishbelly sill). All of these flat cars would look great with a phalanx of D&RGW GP30/GP35 on the point... circa 1963
3 Concor flatcars with 2 trailers each, not the best detail and the trailers aren't very secure but I'll take em. Was a good deal too.
They are FINALLY here !!! Just received 7 Bluford Transfer Cabeese !!! 2 in CRI&P, 2 in PC, 1 each for ICG, GT, and NW. If you don't have one (or a dozen !!!) of these, you're really missin' out !!! Waited 13 months for these things (Thanks, China !!!). Already reserved 5 from the next run !!!
Got my NYC transfer hack today from BLW. Sweet. Needs some heavy weathering when I can get to it. Joe D
