That was such a luck shot--the night shots were easier to get, but thursday, I had a 2 hour block of no classes, so Greg Elems and I met up again. We headed west to catch a V-train and possibly a manifest. What we caught was the Snow Train heading west again. The timing was pretty tight, but it all worked out pretty well. Now, if I only had fired the shutter a split second earlier, I could have had the power in the shot, too. Razzenfrazzen weed filter!
More From Montrose Was in Montrose Friday and Saturday working on getting the new office set up...as you can see it was not all work!
Excellent shots Mr. Cater! Where in Montrose did you go to get that close to the action? I ended up shooting from across Highway 50. Ben
There is a business just off main with a large parking lot next to the tracks. I pulled in and no one seemed to mind. Also if you go down by the wood chip cars, cross the tracks and there is a big open lot that abuts the RR right of way. I stay well enough back that I am not trespassing but I can get close enough for some good shots.
Great shots! The MARS lites are still installed on that one unit--shocking, given the current date! Most have been removed and patched over.
Insta-foamer Everytime I see a mars light now, it's like I'm some kind of an insta-foamer. :tb-biggrin: God help the people in the car with me if I see one, because that's an hour right there.
Some surviving Grande things in and around Glenwood, CO. U.P. may have painted over the Rio Grande on this bridge but you can still make out the Grande name: Same bridge but taken from the Storm King Mountain trail: Another Grande bridge located near the one above: Here is one near downtown Glenwood Springs: Ben
Grande fans should also check out the museum in the Glenwood Springs depot. Admission is only $2 for adults and kids are free. They have a small assortment of signals and one of two Rio Grande Speeders on display. The other Speeder is running and kept on the other side of town. Ben
Grande Idea Sounds like a great idea! I'll be over there in a few months. Gotta get some gas money and my mortgage company doesn't like the collateral I'm putting up. :tb-wink:
Very nice shots, Ben! That GS depot musuem closes about 15-30 inutes before train time, IIRC. The one time I was out there last march, they had just closed for the day, and Amtrak 6 was late, as usual. Here's the lame interstate-side shot on that same bridge at Canyon Creek, CO:
Steve, We lucked out and found a volunteer cleaning up in the shop around the speeder. He was very knowledgeable and hopefully he will be working there on the day that you arrive. If you have kids he will actually let them get in the Speeder and explain what all of the controls do. Ben
Here's a couple more survivors that I forgot to put in this thread last night. Some of you have already seen them in the Colorado U.P. Action thread. Ben
This book I recently picked up at Barnes & Noble had some neat CO railroad ghost info. A note in there said David Moffat's private DNW&P car Marcia, named after his wife, was on display in Craig, CO. Can someone confirm?
Wow, Uncle Pete sure moves stuff around. Funny, since there's a strange engine with a number of 5371 in the UP Steam Shop..... Pics this weekend....
