Crew failed to line a split rail derail properly. Shoved over it, and when pulling back out, spilled them everywhere.
This derailment was caused by a crew failing to properly line a switch at a wye. Crew shoved through switch, then pulled forward, derailing the cars.
And last for now.... While operating as Engineer on a Freight train, I was able to stop short of a fire that had went across the Mainline and was burning on both sides of the tracks.
We did an inspection, until we couldn't breath, and found several ties burned up. We were able to take the 136 car train over the area at walking speed and they changed the ties later after the fire was out. Never a dull moment railroading.
Jerry, great photos, and scary too! I think most of us modelers have had similar results as you show, except the fire, hopefully. Do you think the open points could have been prevented if your employer had used Peco turnouts? :tb-biggrin:
I don't know how the fire started. In total, probably close to 20 acres burned on each side of the tracks. Because of the terrain it was hard to put out by the firefighters.
OK. So it doesn't sound like something caused by RRing activities. That leaves it to something such as lightning, or nearby human stupidity. Boxcab E50

On #2 track the boxcar went into the rocks. 21st Ave. foreground.
