Hi guys! I'm building a snow shed on one of my end modules. Here are some pictures of the prototype: [ June 29, 2005, 05:45 PM: Message edited by: SmolderZ ]
This is what I build so far, tomorrow I'm going to paint it. Shot of the portal: Shot of the portal with a double stack wagon standing in it, it just fits, I intended too : A shot of the side, how it would look like when a car runs through it: Here's an overview, it's quite long: I also made sure the width of the shed at the corner is wide enough to make a Z-Scale Big Boy boiler able to sway in there Note: Some of the support poles are a bit off. When the model is secured onto the module I will fix this. These pictures could've been better, I'll try to make em with natural light tomorrow. Rob is that you? Welcome! I LOVE the shed. It looks awsome so far. I think your UP locomotives are going to have a great home. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more photos! Rob Kluz
Great job SmolderZ, and welcome to Trainboard! Yes, that snow shed looks real nice, and I can't wait to see how it looks on your module, especially when you pack trees around it. -Robert
Thanks guys!! Yes Mr Kluz, it's me! Now I don't have to email you on my progress, you can follow it right here! I'm really looking forward to finish this module. The base is allready done and is waiting to be covered with track and scenery. Here's an overview of the module: I made this with Autocad, I always make my plans with this software The module basically is a big mountain with a spiral in it. The above track is 4 cm higher then the track comming out of the shed. Note the tunnel portal at the above track. Everything behind the tunnel portal and the snow shed will be inside the mountain. I do have a slight problem with making progress, since I have no experience in adding scenery I ordered a layout kit from Woodland Scenics to start learning how to make scenery. I ordered it a while ago at my local hobby shop but it seems to be delayed, they promised me it will arive next week, I really hope it does! Offtopic: Rob (ztrack), I have a question for you; I really like the c44-9 but theres a small problem with the front coupler: It's angled downward and doesn't couple properly with any car. The coupler is glued onto the shell right? Then I would have to snap it off and try to glue it back on. Any suggestions how to do the job properly? I agree with the others, just outstanding work and imagination on your part. What kind of grades did you wind up with on the spiral? Bill K. Houston
It's quite steep, about 3%. A bit to much to my liking but I'm sure it won't be a problem. I'll be mostly running multi unit trains and I love the fact they have to attack such a steep grade all the time
Welcome aboard Rob That is an impressive module - will look superb when the scenery is in place. I look forward to progress pics.
Rob, Yes simple enough solution to fix the coupler. Pull it out, it is only glued in. Instead of glueing it back in place, there is a hole already tapped is the shell for a screw to be inserted. I believe MTL screws will work. Push the coupler back into the shell, align the hole in the coupler to the plate and screw in place. The coupler will sit farther back in the shell then it does now. Rob
smolderZ: Very clear view of the snow shed. I thought I knew what a snow shed was, but I now know it is a tunnel used only in the winter time. What material did you use to make the snow shed? Excellent model. I love the close clearances. Welcome to TB!
Thanks again for the kind words! Thanks for the tip Rob!, any clue where I can get those screws? sapacif, it's all made out of wood the top of the tunnel is 2mm thick airplane wood if you want details I'm fooling around with my camera, the whole tunnel is painted and now I can add weathering details. When I see that picture I want to finish the module right now!
There are a few things I want to do today. The track colored red is Marklin track which is not viewable and doesn't need to be weathered, I'll lay these down first. I have to wait for an airbrush kit from my hobby shop to weather the microtrains track which I use in all the viewable areas. I'm also starting to cut a 4 cm deep ditch at the side of the snow shed so it looks to be on the side of a mountain. At first I thought of making this area flat but making a ditch gives a very nice effect like in the prototype pictures. I also have to figure out how to fixate my track at the end of the modules. I think Svein-Martin Holt has a good method for that: I'll have to try to solder track on a screw, and see if gets solid enough. Update: The 4 cm ditch is done, tomorrow I'll lay the Marklin track and post a picture of the module to show the progress. [ July 01, 2005, 06:02 PM: Message edited by: SmolderZ ]
An overview shot, I just laid some Marklin track: The benchwork looks pretty crude, but it's really solid. I will add 9 mm thick panels on the side to give it a clean look.
This is gona be a nice module! I think it was a good idea to make the ditch, it will look much more natural this way.
