What a bizarre world we live in...Model Power, the dreadnought of the model railroading world, snatches up Atlas....and they are now "one and the same". What's that old joke line? "THEY LIVE AMONG US"
In my humble opinion, we're going to see a heck of a lot more and worse. The Baby Boom generation is in its mid to late sixties which means that many of us are forced to abandon the hobby for assisted living facilities, old folks homes, etc and even death. We are mainly collectors and leave large collections for our loved ones to dispose of the excess they find we had, and either store it or sell it off eventually. As I browse the N scale ebay listings I am seeing more and more buyers from estates who don't know anything about the product and put them out there, often without testing. There are no known N scale evaluators per se, and often have to go off other eBay listings, or just trial and error. Resulting, we see laughable posts, careful posts, too many untested trains, overvalued cheap stuff, old Bachmann stuff called classic and on and on. This leave us to select carefully, take educated chances, and keep my workshop handy to undo some of the horrendous paint jobs or modifications done to good stuff. For example, I just bought a Kato ConCor S-2 Northern for $66, which ran great but looked dirty and horrible in the photos and had to remove fingernail polish the owner painted the tender with. Thanks to "UnPaint" it is now good as new. I am 66 with over 600 quality locos, all dc, and 1500 pieces of rolling stock, plus a fully stocked parts and workshop, 4 layouts, and a lot in other scales, and my exwife has informed me that she plans to just come over the turn the stuff over to either my son, or a friend of mine......or just abandon it. She must have a lot of money to spare. Otherwise, it seems incredibly foolish to simply toss out a good sized chunk of money. This would not be anywhere close to the first time I have heard about such an event. However, my family knows there is money in what I've accumulated, I made certain of that. Knowing them, they will not dispose of my things, without first trying to gain some profit.
I will believe this one when I read that the Pope converted to the Methodist religion, Bachmann has bought out Athearn, and all the retailers start putting the regular size boxes back on the shelves and drop their process by 50 cents to boot.
Ken - Excellent post! You have explained that aspect of our hobby with refreshing clarity. I'm a bit behind you in years, but not by much...and I operate much as yourself, although WAY smaller in scale. But yes most of my buying is after careful selection, mostly educated chances...and prepared to go to work on them, which has been an education in itself. I often joke with my wife and daughter about the disposal of my collection after the train leaves the station for the last time. Kind of a gallows humor, that. I've noticed a lot of the clueless descriptions/estate sellers lately on ebay lately. As a rule, it's all overpriced - as if they think because it's old it HAS to be worth more than what someone paid for it, like browsing antique stores that try to sell Bachmanns for $100 a loco because they are "antiques".
Well... I decided to tiptoe back into the fray after not selling on that Internet Auction Community for a number of years. Hopefully you guys won't find my listings to be too humorous... tough crowd on TB these days... :wideeyes: Maybe I'll just go back to the sidelines afterwards... we'll see.
