Has anyone taken note of the latest, Model Railroader, cover page? Stubby's, just came in the mail and you might want to check out the NYC, Hudson, pulling a mail train. Timing is everything...right?
I'm going to post this question here as well as a few other places in the hopes an 'ATSF'er can help... It's been established that the old rivarossi/atlas/concor heavyweight 'Combine', long baggage, and diner are ringers for the Santa Fe prototypes of these cars... Does anyone know if the unique long baggage car (1849) survived into the late 50's? apparently it was rebuilt to the baggage car in 1943, it would seem likely that it would have made it to the late 50's... I'm about to paint a stripped car body into ATSF green... Thanks, Bruce
Bruce, Kenneth Anthony, is who I'd refer you to. There is another thread here on TB, where a similar dicussion took place and I think he covers the history of the baggage cars. I haven't found the thread... yet, as the titals we tend to use here are very misleading. Most of the baggage cars lasted later then the 50's as they were used in mail service until the railroads lost the contract. Shortly after... most baggage cars found their way into in M.O.W. service. Actpulsa, might be interested in this gem. Overnight, I had chance to visit with another fella who comes from a family of retired Santa Fe Rails. He seemed to recall the baggage cars being used for dry ice refrigerator service. This didn't last long, having something to do with poisoning the fresh stuff or freezer burning the closest items. It's been rumored that one of museums purchased an old baggage car, upon opening it for the first time they found what appeared to be an ice crib. May I suggest this car may have been one of those used as stated above. The puzzling thing about this ice crib there was no plumbing to get rid of the water from the melting ice and little to no rust. It appeared to be, clean and as new. Something else to puzzle over.
Ummmmmmmmmmm RICK :tb-nerd: Dry ice doesnt produce 'water' when it 'melts'...no need for plumbing :tb-wink:
My point exactly. tongue: Then there's condensation...right? Hey, I want to see pictures of your mail trains. Not male trains...ahh...mail trains.rolleyes:
Doing a bit of research and found this write-up, tutorial and pictorial. I thought it might add to our previous discussion. Reefer http://www.atsfrr.com/Reviews/HO/Passenger/Lmbrt/ExpReef/ExpReef.htm Baggage Car http://www.atsfrr.com/Reviews/HO/Passenger/Lmbrt/Bag/Baggage.htm RPO http://www.atsfrr.com/Reviews/HO/Passenger/Lmbrt/RPO1/RPO.htm I know HO examples but this is what I'ma looking for in N Scale. Anyone out there...takeing notes. Grin!
Other than incidental frost from moisture in the atmosphere...I dont think they worried to much about water...:tb-tongue:
Rick... concerning the three cars you linked above... The 70' baggage is available as a bash from M&R sides... The RPO is done and will be available very soon...(also from M&R sides) The only car not available is the Home built reefer...and the reefers before it in the 4000 series, the ones rebuilt from wood ones, sheathed over... Bruce
Bruce, I take it this means: We still have to fiddle dink around with these cars to get what we want...right? Or better said scratchbuild...Just not my thing. I'm not blessed with the scratchbuilding abilities most of you have. I need ready to run. I know nambie pambie but darn what's a guy to do. Seems, the tutorial I meant to post got lost somewhere. Now, I can't find it again. Oh well. It is what it is!
I am quite thankful that I am able to alter the looks enough to approach the cars I want. Sure makes things a lot more practical. I somehow wish that I could instil the skills necessary to those who want them to help them enjoy the hobby to that level.
The lettering on the "stock" Santa Fe combine is all wrong for use as a rider car on the end of the Fast Mail Express. First off it was not a Railway Post Office car. Second, the American Railway Express was long gone by the time of the era that I model. I repainted my car and added the appropriate lettering showing Railway Express Agency on the side. Here is an image of one of the prototype cars while in service.
Russell, I was hoping you'd throw in here. I saw your picture over on RailImages and was hoping you'd post it here. I'd love to see more of your mail train. I do agree and the car you modeled is vaguely, how I remember them as well. Thanks
Russell.. I'm glad you mentioned that (about the lettering, as it exists, on the Rivorossi car) I've acquired a bunch of these cars...all but one to use as cores for the various M&R car sides which Roberto posted to me... Of course, I saved one to repaint and decal as one of those non-airconditioned rider cars...i'd like to build a tribe series sleeper and a heavyweight chair car to change out as a rider here and there....
