I like your treatment of the wheel sides. As someone who has worked on real freight cars, I see far too many folks who overdo the color or weathering. Only fresh rust on essentially new wheels has an orange hue. And when new it is light, briefly there, before time causes darkening toward brown tones.
This is how I weathered the cars. Same as these gons except no red wash at the end. All metal surfaces get the rust treatment http://s1381.photobucket.com/user/ClinchValley/library/Weathering?sort=2&page=1
This Bachmann camp car is another I weathered using the same method, but gave it a green wash at the end
I recently bought three Kadee log car kits. The only thing I don't like about the wheels is the wheel to rail surface are black! Maybe that stuff will come off with use over time! Thanks for the info.
I don't think Kadee would make wheels that would do that, Ken. My only complaint is there's no shine ... or polished surface as seen on real wheels. I'll let you know after I get the cars constructed and on the roster.
This looks like a really fun layout. I hate seeing a cool layout because it makes me want to switch scale. he he I scanned through quickly hoping to find a track plan, but did not see one. Is there a drawn plan for your layout?
This is the basic track plan. Things change as it is being built, but will give you an idea of the overall footprint.
Almost all photos are from the peninsula on the upper left (Phoenix). The logging branch runs along the right side of the peninsula wall and across the back wall (top of plan)
