Do you need mirrors for the trucks? Might I suggest Showcase Miniatures? They have photo etched stainless details just for that.
That's close. The one I got is the same truck but has the sleeper. Shipping seems fair from them. Sometimes they are super fast on getting an item shipped and sometimes a tad slow but I have been pleased with them. I have made several orders over the past few years and no issues.
In2Tech helped me out on mirrors for the RPS Ford trucks! Super awesome. The Royale Models truck came with some. With that said, I have been eyeballing those Showcase Miniatures mirrors and the detail parts you noted before to use on some other trucks I have.
Now that I have my new lighted magnifying glasses, I might try one set of mirrors on a RPS truck, but I really don't expect much success They are so small it's crazy! @BNSF FAN You got this one? NM, it's on the freaking package, my bad! It's this one The 4900sf model! Geez, pay attention in2tech
That's it! I forgot, the main colors were with a spray can and the trim was brushes. Still waiting on the CFO to order the cordless airbrush for me
Thanks sir. I've found when parts are solid colors or just need a base coat of one color that I can do a decent job with a rattle can. I still want to get an air brush and learn to get better
Last weekend, I didn't get much done due to work. My biggest accomplishment was going through and pulling out all the magazines that I have read and sorting them. The stacks look neat but it was a mess on my desk for a while. I started thinking about making a wheel load for a gondola as well. Thinking I may want to do them in two rows of sort of leaning wheels rather than just a scattered load. Have to cut out a lot more wheels than this to do it. I have plenty either way. Wondering which way sounds better? Maybe similar to this idea? (photo from Google Images) Here's a start... Then I have a pair of these on the work bench. I keep telling myself that I need to save these for later in the winter but they keep calling out to me...... I opened this one and cut out the wood frames and put it back to the side. Not much of an update but it's all i've got for now
Looks like you're using pizza cutter wheels for the load--good use for something you might not otherwise have a use for, if you use low-pros on your layout. On the other hand, if you use pizza cutters, the low-pros would have a good load, too.
Richard, Real nice work on the Royale grain trailers and tractor. As you know, I have done several of John's tankers and really like the changes he has made in printing wheels and tires separately. Don't know about you but I found that after painting them I had trouble getting them together. No big deal, however. Keep up the great work and postings, I really enjoy your work.
Actually swapping to metal wheels as I can so I have a pretty mixed up mess of extra plastic wheel sets to work with. Not sure I'm up for it but I've considered drilling holes in the centers and then using some round tubing and a hammer to trim down the flanges to give them a better look as a load. Guess we shall see where it all goes.
Thank you Carl. Not sure my finished trucks are even in your league. I too have done several trailers from John at Royale Models. Really like his products. I do like the new separate wheels and tires. It makes them so much easier to paint. As for assembly, I didn't have any issue with the sets for the trailer or the rear tandem on the tractor but the front steer tires were a bit tough. One gave me fits but it finally went together without me breaking it. The tractor was the first one from Royale that I had done and I'm happy with it so probably more of those in my future.
Richard, You are in the "bigs" and I in the AAA. Nice work. I meant to ask a question about the new tractor. The stacks and tanks look very "chromish', did you use Molotow on them ?
I'll have to look when I'm in the train room again but it was either Floquil Platinum Mist or Floquil Silver. Still have a bottle of each and don't remember which one I grabbed. Molotow chrome is what I need to get for these. They would probably look a lot better.
Richard, One reason I asked about the chrome is because the parts look real shiny. When I have used Molotow and seal the truck with gloss coat it seems to dull the Molotow. May be something I am doing ? ?
Try "Green stuff world" chrome metal (brush formula) if you are brushing on. Maybe just a little better than molotow as it is more resistant to dulling after touch and much better priced. They make an airbrush formula too but I've yet to try that although I have some to test.
Molotow as well as many other water based chromes (green stuff world included) are unfortunately going to dull with any type of a clear. They pretty much have to be applied last. The only chrome effects that seem to take a clear coat that I've experience with are the Alclad metal system and modo chrome powder. The application system for those two though are impractical for n scale stuff IMO. It best to just clear coat then apply the chrome and be done.
A follow up for @Carl Sowell - Here are all the paints I have used on this truck. Floquil Platinum Mist for the stacks, fuel tanks/steps, air cleaner, grill, and bumper. Floquil Engine Black for the tires and one touch up Krylon Satin Oxford Blue for the cab Krylon Matte Aluminum for the trailer and the wheels Rust-Oleum Semi-Gloss Black for the tarps and the truck frame So, nothing fancy. Since I use the Floqil in very small amounts, I'm hoping that those two bottles last a long time. The 3 rattle cans are cheap and work well. Still want an airbrush at some point though. More trucks to come but may have to wait until spring. Outdoor painting season is fading away here.
