Caught Dec 26 in Cheyenne, WY Class A/Level 1 Radioactive material!! In WB train, heading for either Utah or new facility in Nevada. Had a LONG string of these radioactive HazMat cars.
These G-100 gons were built by SP in the Sacramento Shops in 1958 and 1962 to haul iron ore for Kaiser Steel from the Eagle Mountain mine east of Frerrum, California to the smelting and rolling mill in Fontana, CA. They initially had clasp brakes but were replaced with new composit brake rigging in the mid 60's leaving the distictive unused extensions sicking out at each end of the truck frames where the old brakes were mounted. They ended their life in aggregate service in Texas.
This is a scrap carrying open, but seen here carrying ballast spoil - these were originally flats for steel traffic but had these rather unusual box bodies welded on to turn them into scrap carriers!
Wow, those are unusual! I see the flatcar ancestry, and wouldn't have noticed till you mentioned it.. BNSF FAN, congrats on 1000+ posts! Here's to your next 1000!
