Oh wow Ben, those turned out great! I've been soo busy since I've returned home that mine are still on in the camera! I gotta get my other ones posted on here, hopefully this week. Can't wait to see your Railfest pics! Mike
Thanks Mike! I kind of shot them on the fly while we were out. I bet your's are even better. I have the first batch of rail fest photos posted and hope to get some more up in the next few days. Ben
Stand by for some more photos to come. Mike aka pastoolio is in town and we are planning to head out with our cameras this Saturday. Also I had an opportunity / honor to meet Darren after work last week but it was a little to late to railfan. Hopefully a bunch of us can arrange a railfan trip someday. Ben
Thanks Ben, you have pushed me to get my pics up from last month before this Saturday comes! =) More Radium pics...
After getting a bunch more shots of trains from the same couple locations by the tunnel (which I won't bore you with here), I decided to try a different approach to Radium and go across the tracks and up the hill. Not the best due to sun position, but the sweeping curve sure helped out. As I was walking up to this EB loaded waiting in the hole... ... here comes an empty down grade
As soon as it passed, I hurried across the tracks and up the hill before the loaded got going. note in the pic above, the large rock formation above and to the left of the lead loco is where I climbed up on to get the tunnel shots from. =) Mike
The morning I left, I decided to have breakfast at Yarmony, hoping something will come by. Red over Red, something coming this way? Waiting.... so lets take a pic of the CP About an hour later and here it comes!!! Hmm, not really what I was expecting.... After a friendly wave, that would be the last train activity I'd see on Trough rd for that vacation. -Mike
Pushed? I thought it was more of a gentle nudge. Great photos! I hope that you can share some of your railfanning locations this Saturday. Ben
Mike, Nice coverage at Radium! I hiked the rock that you shot from, but I liked the shot from the bigger hill behind it, as it gave a different angle on the tunnel. If you ever hike that tall hill, you might find a collapsible saw I lost there in 2008. It is black with an orange knob, made by Fiskars..... Yarmony is cool; I have seen shots there that had coal trains strung out on the curves, stacking the train on 3 or 4 levels. I bagged a neat S-curve there in 2008.
Hemi, I'll take a look for your saw next time I'm up there Caught this work train at De Beque while chasing Amtrak -Mike
I guess I should post a few shots of last weekend's Montrose local before Mike & I upload yesterday's photos. Loading Wood Chips Ben
So last Saturday my son and I picked Mike up at 7:00am and headed out for some railfanning. Our goal was to at least make it to the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel. Our first stop was to shoot a stack of old ties. This would be only one of many stacks that we would see over the coarse of the day. A short time later we would catch our first train of the day. Ben
Oh wow Ben, your camera is better in that dark morning shadow than mine! I'll get moving on my stuff.... Mike
Are these along the main track? Or on a spur? Seems a bit unusual if they'd pile where to reload would bottle up a main.
Yes, it was an early rise with Ben and his son knocking at the RV door at 7am (6am my time) but I was ready for the day! Excellent weather and lots of driving awaited. Judging by Ben's photos, I'm sure he had better luck bagging pics than I did. Here are mine from that first train of the day... -Mike
