Cajon Station, Cajon Pass, California. Summer 1998. Cotton Belt B40-8. A little bit out of subject as second and third unit wear Armour Yellow paintscheme, and as in 1998 SP/SSW was already a fallen flag.

The state of California required SP to use a water based paint instead of lacquer based and it didn't stick very well. Causing the "Desert Storm" effect

Yes, that is California paint. Ford had to repaint a ton of cars due to that paint

I believe they all did. I had a GM vehicle which needed work. It was due to primer failure.

My goodness, that's a rather sad sight. Looks like a modeler tried to remove the paint with brake fluid and toothbrush.

This GE must have been painted with lacquer based paint. Photo taken at Brooklyn Yard in Portland. It was very rare to see anything but EMD power north or east of Roseville. img564.jpg

What year was the photo taken? Because it could be original GE paint done in Erie, or it could have predated the rule.

I'm guessing about 1972. I'll have to find the colour slide

I believe those paint rules came along in the latter half of the 1980's?

Just found the colour slide and no date on it so I'm guessing 1972
