I might be new here, but that is a nice looking freedom train. i have seen the other pics and the finished product, but that is an amazing model of a N scale freedom train( I model HO 1940's n 50s though) ------------------------------------ the north american railroading dream was built with steam AJ
Jerry, I just went through the entire 30+ pages of your AFT building project. I am not a modeler but must admit I am really impressed with your scratch building talents. Excellent stuff. I follow Burlington John and Todd Schannuth's efforts to keep the memory of the AFT alive, and you are doing a great job. I just like the real thing, so this pic is for you, the AFT reincarnated briefly in 2002, 4449 trip to Bend, Or.
Jerry, Very nice work. I too can remember me and my family visiting the train when I was 6 yrs. old. It made a stop in my hometown of Florence, S.C. Just one question, when you get finished with the project have you considered taking your AFT on the road? It would be a great to see in person. Great JOB and keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing the progress you are making on this beauty. Eddie
Thanks for the comments guys! I hope to get back on some more of the cars soon. Eddie, thats a cool idea of getting it out on the road....just like the real one!
This was the first thread I read when I first found TrainBoard! I almost forgot about it !! Was great rereading it...thnxs .
Well I finally snagged a ConCor AFT off of Ebay. Now that I finally have the locomotive Jerry I'll try to catch up with you! Keep us posted on this project. Take care Eddie
Thats Great Eddie! Look forward to your trains progress! (Sure would be nice if Kato did some the cars!)
If anyone is interested in the original containers......here they are. American Freedom Train Containers - eBay (item 160497937222 end time Oct-29-10 17:31:26 PDT)
(Nothing wrong with the containers.....just think I am going to get some more decals made and try it again using the MT's circus wagons.)
Jerry, The MT circus wagons are just their 20' containers with a resin bottom glued to them. Nothing really unique. Their containers are very nice, opening doors and all.
I am eager to see how this unfolds. Some day soon I will have my Kato AFT GS-4, and I will also have the decals from Todd. I will be joining you in N scale AFT building. This ought to be a fun project.
Just looked it up and saw it just now. I am thinking I might build my own anyway simply because it looks like a fun project, and if I get behind I can buy individual cars from Lowell.
It will definatly be cheaper to do it yourself! I may see how the showcase cars look and put my loads inside those as mine are really not a 'sturdy' design, but I was winging it. I have been hoping to get back on this project for some time.
For display cars, I was thinking of going with American Limited core kits and then just making my own car sides out of styrene or getting someone to etch them for me.
Probably is, and its more satisfying, however, being I was born 8 years after the AFT...I have no memories to draw on and bring up building this train. If anything I was gonna use it as a "train show" train.
