Here is one of my favorite oop's! Sorry guys for the scanned photo but this was before digital. Here's the story: My dad was leaving town (West to Rawlins, WY) and had to back their train back into town. On the rear end of the train were a bunch of bad order cars. He was telling his engineer "easy, easy" but he wasn't paying attention that much. Finally my dad told him that he could stop. Stop the engineer did! He used the indepent breaks on the locomotives. The result was they tore the whole end sill off this covered hopper. It was BO to begin with and now it was really bad ordered! Later the shop guys came and cut off the bent parts and placed it on one of UP's wreck flats. I bought a cheap Inter Mountain kit and started to model this mishap for my dad's layout. Not sure how much he will appreciate it, but it will lead to a good story!
Southbound at speed + open switch for propane distributor's spur = lead loco dug in. Maitland, FL, 1982
Aftermath of a stack train derailment on the BNSF Transcon east of Grants. It blocked both main lines. Sorry for the distance, but this was as close as I was allowed to go. This was taken on the shoulder of I-40.
Here's what happens when you mix a 12-degree curve, 105 empty coal gons, and a heavy-handed hogger: Crater Loops, CO:
Would a hogger get fired for causing something like this? Could you prove the hogger caused it? Thanks.
As for proving the hogger caused this, I dunno. Here's a few more shots. Beleive it or not, all 8 cars are still coupled! Gotta love rotary couplers...
The download will tell all. If he did cause this he is definately fired. Those aluminum hoppers are EXPENSIVE!!!
