pic I will have to say I was expecting a picture of a riot scene.... But the model picture looks great as well.
Thanks guys! Yup, line poles and silos are right up there on the list. This particular location is a river / floodplain area so silos might show up elsewhere. Bok, your opinion really helps! Thanks everybody!
What area is it? Midwest scenery is kind of generic (IMO), it's the additional details that give you a point of reference. Obviously a railroad like the WC is going to set that point quite clearly. Can't wait to see more. I love the WC.
Here is another view of the same scene. I deliberately did not add too much foam to the branches of the supertrees. I am aiming for a bit of a "trains through the trees" effect here. The location is meant to represent the area between Gills Landing and Readfield Wisconsin. Really trying to emphasize the "woodsiness" of the area. Other areas will have more farm fields, industry, etc. and less woods. Here, I am trying to convey the "trees, trees, everywhere!" feeling. I agree, there is nothing really Wisconsiny about this scene. Just about any rolling stock might look at home in these scenes. My grand hope is that somebody from the area might think it looks a bit like home. More trees, bushes, and line poles to follow... Thanks again for the feedback!
Heres a closeup of the forrest to show you the effect I mean... Now if I had just staged a train behind it eh?
Yeah, I like that you can see the train passing through the trees. And the trees don't look like they're missing foliage or anything, either. It's kinda like when you're driving along the highway with a train running parallel to you. When it passes behind some trees you yell "Get outta the way dumb trees!" but you can still see the train passing behind them.
looks nice  http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&...=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1352&bih=897 google came up with these if you need more suggestions
Good idea on the google images. Will take them into consideration. I'm aiming for the hints of fall effect. Just subtle hints of color here and there. Third rail, sure do know that feeling! I'll wonder if some visitors to the layout might have that same thought in the coming 2012 convention. Tee Hee Sure do "preciate" the feedback guys!
Had a group of fellow model railroaders over today. The reactions were very positive. My friend wants to post a youtube video of trains rolling "through the woods". I'll let you guys know when its posted. The scene needs a lot more work. I will be adding more details like more trees, bushes, river debris, dead limbs in the river, line poles etc. Thanks again for all you suggestions!
I think this scene looks great. Reminds me of that part of Wisconsin very strongly. Can't wait to see more!
A visitor to the layout snapped these shots. The first shot is of one of the Wolf River crossings with a scant few improvements that I could muster in the two hours before guests arrived. There is, again, a lot more work to be done. I just added a few more trees, some dead trunks etc. I know its too clean in a natural way. A lot more to come! The second shot was just for fun. Please excuse the unpainted trip pins etc. Right now, scenery is my focus. Rolling stock improvements to come... Dunno how the Soo caboose got added onto that WC train, but when in Rome... :we2-policeman:
Neal, just curious, do you mean the Wolf River that's west of Appleton/Green Bay? And I was all excited for a white/black/red Soo caboose, did the Soo even have boxcar red cabeese?
West of Green Bay? Yep, thats the one! Red (tuscan) cabeese? I saw one in the Chicago area back in the day. Try searching some of the online picture sites. Like this:http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=96104
