Here's my be-decalled CN caboose behind the stock MT GP-9. I don't know about you, Garth, but I almost went through the entire roll of wire to finish the grab irons. Little suckers were flying all over the place! Guess that goes with the territory Thanks to Ben for desigining this kit; it makes newbs like me look almost competent. Next up is the CP van, then either a building or two, or perhaps one or all 4 of Loren's new Thrall boxcars. Might actually finish one of them before the summer is up; I'm off next weekend on military service for the next 8 weeks, and that means fewer distractions around the house!
Yes they can fly but a bit of double sided tape (a fly spec is enough) in the jaw of the tweezers makes it a bit easier to hang on to them and I also make a loop in the end of the wire and pin that end down to the desk. Anyway here is my finished model. Time to go get a pizza for diner. cheerz Garth
Pizza is finished. This is just out of the paint box, now got to figure out how to decorate it. Almost looks like Christmas in July!! cheerz Garth
Fine job on the caboose. When the CN Geep receives the same treatment the result will be terrific! Dom
great job the cabeese guys. They really look well done. Garth is that going to be a Pensy streamliner?
It certainly was a streamlined K4 originally but from the scrap heap it ended up on the Athabaska Northern so there will be some changes for sure, but it will still haul class 1 varnish. Might alter the chin lines at the front a bit to create a look more reminiscent of the shovel nose streamliners.
Thats a good looking steamer. You need to get her pulling some passenger cars. Ive been working on some model cars. They come 2 per kit, but I have a 50% success rate with these.
Jeff, I'll be there. Joe. The kits are pretty easy to put together if you have the right tools. You need something to bend the parts against at right angles with out bending the part. I use my digital calipers for this since they can hold the part and have a nice square edge. You'll also like to have some good cutters to remove the parts from the fret, and some small files for cleaning them up. I had some trouble getting the rear tires on the rear of the sedan. There wasn't enough room to clear the fender so I had to bend the axle a little. The first time through your bound to make some mistake with one of the parts, and can strip it off the second kit. I would have to describe them as fragile. Its really easy to warp some of the small parts, even when cutting them out of the fret. -Curn
Looks really nice! I like the whole scene, and those cars really date the scene better than the steamer does.
Curn brought his layout down to the Great Train Expo in San Jose. Always better in person but what really got me was how well the desert realism was and the varied terrain was was really well bone. I don't care so much for double loops but I changed my mind with this one. Really well done and great for a western scene. .
Chris, How is your layout coming along? Saw your latest N Scale Ma & Pa loco - looks fantastic!!! Yours, John
Chris, “when that AZL heavy mike comes out”, boy I hope you do some work on it before that happens! Did you make some etch brass sides for the Hallmark ornament Freedom Train cars? Have you checked out N Scale Limited? N Scale Limited John
Kit Built test train As part of the 'Shasta' project, which is going to be my first attempt at modules rather than the stand alone layouts I usually build, I though I had better make sure that the rolling stock I was building would actualy run and stay on the track! The intermodal trains will be a mix of Alan Curtis 89 footers and 5 unit spine cars, the familiar MTL double stacks and some TTX NWA33 3 unit articulated well cars I am scratchbuilding. I had also just finished assembling seven Robert Ray 60ft centre beams I picked up from Z-track resale which will go into the mixed merchandise consists. I really enjoyed putting those together. So, I got 'Cuyahoga' out of the shed and put it up in the workshop and gave the new stock a good work out. Sorry about the 'eastern' road power I haven't got around to stocking up on U.P and S.P power yet. Video of the results are at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YuoSzVxlcY I'll keep you up to date on the 'Shasta' project as it progresses. The first module will be 'Cantara Loop' which is the perfect track layout for an end module. a pure 180 degree horseshoe curve with a river in the middle of it. after that the other end module will be a multitrack fiddle yard with sidings up to 10 foot long.
So Kevin, you exhausted the centerbeam stock...:grumpy6ho: That must have been quit some hours of fun building all these cars.
