I was thinking it would be fun to get a UP locomotive and put an SP patch on it, as if SP had borged UP instead of the other way around.

Ok, I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but I was down in the train bunker looking at my layout yesterday, it suddenly dawned on me how colorful my car and loco fleet is. Modern railroading just isn't as colorful as the 70's era (my layout). I'm really glad I sold off or traded all my modern stuff in favor of 70's stuff.

    NICE! :thumbs_up::thumbs_up::thumbs_up:

Our club layout includes modules modeling the Columbia River's southbank, but down to pretty much a person we have become very disenfranchised with Union Pacific, so we almost always run whatever else we have, including SP, GN, PNWR/WPRR... sometimes even Pennsy. Most of the public doesn't know the difference anyway.

I should make my SP patch of a UP. You have inspired me.

Let me be the first to flame you.

    WHATTHEHOCKEY-STICKAREYOUTALKINGABOUT?

(Now let's see how many angry PM's you get)

    :tb-biggrin:

I actually agree that, in general, railroading used to be more colorful if you interpret more colorful also as more varied in terms of road names.

Around here (Portland, Oregon) in the late 70's, everything ws pretty much BN green, UP armour yellow, or SP bloody nose, because those were the three major railroads here. We've had a bit more coloring since then. Part of it is that UP seems to share power with CP often, and BNSF frequently has at least one CN or NS loco kicking around its yard. That's only a small part. Part of it is that the 4449 is out and about a lot, and that adds a lot of color just by itself. Part of it is that BN merged with ATSF and so, on any given day, you can see about ten different merger paint schemes and patches over in that yard, as opposed to JUST BN green in the seventies. (I have wondered whether BNSF has dueling graphic artists who are each trying to make their own paint schemes stick.) We also now have a mess of shortlines with all their attendant paint schemes and patches. The result has been that in the Portland metro area, on any given day, it's not unsual to see 5, 6... ten or more different paint schemes.

However, I think your statement applies in many other areas of the country.

But, yes, geeky, I wish we had ALL of them still, including, for me anyway, SP, SP&S, GN, NP, CB&Q, Milwaukee Road, and more.

I guess this really isn't a flame war.

and, are you ready for this?

What if BNSF had stayed with the warbonnet scheme, but with one minor color change!

    GAH!

Stick with the Red and Silver...please.

Hmm, maybe you run a regular Warbonnet with it for the Christmas train.

This has GOT to weather better than that red and silver. All the red up here in Portland has faded to already been chewed chewing gum color.

Only the GEs, if you pay attention. It's like the blue on Conrail C40-8Ws. In the early 90s, EMD clearly had better paint.

I actually like this scheme. It's better than the blue-and-silver warbonnet of the 70s, anyway.

Yeah, even when I was up in Portland, the GP60ms and the SD75s always looked sharp, but the Dash-9s in Warbonnets looked horrid.

I've been tempted to use some variation of Black widow for my mythical Central Pacific What If. (UP buys SP, but then spins off most of DRG, Donner and other bits.)

My favorite real paintscheme has always been ATSF Red/Silver and Yellow/Blue Warbonnet, so those were the colors I was originally looking at, but the more I look, the more I think I need to go a different direction. I'm thinking the Kodachrome colors now, but not as much red or yellow. Basically, Blackwidow, but not the silver.

    Or something like that.

I've got 5 dash9's in the black widow scheme almost just like what you done. I painted mine to match my 2 T55 Es44's. http://ewwest.info/index_files/Page343.htm
I really do like the SP patch over the Yellow/Gray borg unit!!
