Actually, I think it was a "dead line" for the GP16's. I think they were being collected in Hamlet before being disposed of :(

Looks to me that they might be going to Roanoke, Va to meet the cutters torch.

Reminds me of the long lines of out-of-service UP and Rock Island diesels I saw in Council Bluffs in May of 1981- everything from SW7s to DD35Bs, and lotsa RI engines.

A couple of days later, I shot a similar gaggle of dead diesels in Oelwein, IA, at the old CGW yard. The shop crews were busy getting GP7s ready for service. I shot the heck out of my camera at both places- never saw so many F-units in one place as I did in Oelwein (well, a few in storage at Hull Ave. Yard in Des Moines a couple of days after that).

IIRC, quite a few GP16s would up shortline rosters, such as Pioneer Rail's lines.

The GP16's have actually turned up on a lot of short lines. There are a couple in the Western part of the state and I know another short line, Aberdeen, Carolina, and Western bought a couple.

Gee, gives me an idea for a topic to post in the ACL / SAL Fallen Flags section. [IMG]
