I've never seen anything quite like this! 14 locos in one consist. The picture shows 11 but there were three more. This was taken in San Antonio, TX on 3-20-05 http://home.comcast.net/~espeeman/14locos.JPG
My wild guesses: A "hospital train"; that is, diesels headed to NLR for heavy repair work Some or most of these units are off lease, returning to lessor, or; Some are being retired & sent soemwhere for storage or direct to a spot designated by a new lessor (Helm, FURX, NREX, etc.), and may come back as "rent-a-wreck" lease locomotives. Then again, it could be a motive power rebalancing- power from one terminal sent to another that doesn't have enough power for trains.
A couple of more shots: http://home.comcast.net/~espeeman/2.JPG http://home.comcast.net/~espeeman/3.JPG the popping and crackling sounds were awesome!
WOW!! Never seen anything like that one . I've got a few pictures with 6 or 7 locos, but nothing like that. Nice catch!
I could model that railroad. I've got too many locos for my layout so I guess just put them all on the track.
That's quite a catch! I think I have caught 8 or 9 on a NS train around here (usually a shuttle run to send excess power back to Linwood yard). I may have a photo that can beat that, if I can dig it up. Harold
Great pictures. Looks like it was taken on the old MKT lines on the west side of downtown. I don't get over there much.
The ATSF Used to do that between Corwith and Willow Springs yard in Chicago 8+ locos pulling one car...over powered
cool!!! have you had time to cross-check any of the engine numbers to see if/which of friscobobs guesses are right??? beast
How did I miss the D&RGW patch tunnel motor in that consist?!? Maybe because I missed the second link...
Not yet but since there seems to be some interest in these picts I thought I'd add a few more for your viewing pleasure! One is a closeup of the Rio Grande TM. http://home.comcast.net/~espeeman/1_TD.JPG http://home.comcast.net/~espeeman/2009.JPG http://home.comcast.net/~espeeman/3153.JPG http://home.comcast.net/~espeeman/3353.JPG http://home.comcast.net/~espeeman/3557.JPG http://home.comcast.net/~espeeman/7877TM.JPG Unfortunately I couldn't get a shot of the three locos under the bridge. There was a large gathering of "homeless" folks down there and I felt uncomfortable. It was too bad because I would have had better access as there was no fence along the way.
according to the dieselshop website, most of these fall in the class (many retired or re-numbered), which doesn't help much. it does say that the group 7877 is in are leased from Progress Rail...... the plot thickens great shots!
that is awesome! i have seen something similar in witchita, but i didn't have a camera, not sure whose they were, it was on a n-s track but i don't remember much else, almost all were former up, but didn't have new numbers, just the up blanked out. beast
