To kick things off this week I grabbed an oldie from my files. This is the Visco Chemical plant on my NTRAK modules.
Yes I used the airbrush, I just used the normal bottle and added water to the acrylic paint. I used 3 colours, 1. Burnt Umber 2. Raw Sieena 3. Mudcake
FG: I am sure all those acrylic guys make something close. There must be 100-200 colors in the rack where they sell those. I would just get two or three shades of something that is appropriate "dirt" in your area and use that. My problem at the store is to stop buying them as they have so many useful colors!
I counted them once but forgot how many thousands there are. There are a few different commercial soft metal castings available from outfits like Detail Associates, Sunrise, Alloy Forms etc. Some are single barrels, some are stacks. Not only was it expensive to buy that many, it was time consuming cleaning out the stock of the local hobby shops over and over again. So I found I could use .177 lead air rifle pellets and roll a rim on one end. I stacked these in the middle and surrounded them with commercial barrels so only the tops show. I also made my own RTV molds and cast resin stacks of barrels. And still, the yard looks kind of empty compared to this PHOTO.

Very nice pictures everyone. Sometimes I look at these and want to rip my layout up and start over. But for now it will have to do. I decided I needed another display case and it arrived a week or so ago. Now I can keep the SP units in the new larger one and the ATSF in the original smaller one. I took out the glass so as not to get the glare. And the smaller one. Since I am on my own this weekend I may try and post a few tomorrow. Plan on running some trains and maybe a few details.
Hope you don't mind unfinished: Full size pics: http://www.railimages.com/gallery/2_Grey_and_Grandure_Construction/aag
Hi folks, An update on the retaining walls from last week... got some ballast and 'grunge' down... uninvited vegetation will be next...
NS: Nice gondola shot! Are they all orange or is that a unique color? Overshoe: Excellent retaining wall continues... Nice job!
Continuing my Kirby, Texas work, here are the refueling racks with some weathering. Hope to add a few people and automobiles this week.
Flash, that engine service area looks great. Very nice. I did get a change to just run some trains today so I took a few shoots. First of the new auto rack. Busy intersection. SD9 pokes it's head past the crossing.
