It's been as while since the "new roundhouse at Pueblo" was built and it was time to set it in it's new home. The first problem I had was the location. The old roundhouse sat in the center of the area and was far from the edge of the layout. This was OK for the old building but the new structure's interior could not be viewed from this location; Old roundhouse location The new location would have to be where the diesel facilities are in the lower left corner of the picture. All of the engine facilities' buildings would have to be moved and some eliminated to do this. This is about where the roundhouse will set and the new view behind it. I will post more soon as much progress has been made since the last photo was taken.
Hurts My Head Is this going to be another project that hurts my head? :hmm4er: I can't get over building this structure much less moving it! What a project! Locating the center, aligning the turntable, etc. That can be very difficult. I am looking forward to this, though.
Thanks everyone, I'm glad to see there is some interest in this topic, so here are a few more pohots OK Flash, I'm not gong into a lot of detail on the construction of some of the details but will show where I placed some of the things that are found around a steam facility. The pit for the turntable was in the same place, but more on that later, here is one of the additions. To start with I did not have a ash pit on the old one so here is the ash pit; The tower lifts the ashes up and then they are dumped into a gondola ont the adjoining track. An overhead view showing the pits and how they connect. You can see some of the storage tracks for locos also. Next I will explain what I did to modifiy the pit for the new turntable.
This area will need more detail but shows the back side of the buildings, which are near the edge of the layout. Thw roundhouse and office addition are to the left, the back shop in the center, and the wheel shop which is connected to the back shop on the right. The turnrable pit stayed in the same area but the new turntable was smaller in size so I lined the inside of the hole with cardboard strips until it was reduced down to the correct diameter.
Awesome stuff, John. Since the NSC convention is in Denver this year, we planned a June trip to Alaska. But a grandbaby came along, due June 14, born three weeks early. So we moved the Alaska trip to August. Oh well, maybe I can get up there in September or so. Your work is inspiring me to better detail work. It's showing up first on my ships, but soon it will be spreading to the rest of the layout!
Thanks Pete, I enjoy doing the detail work, it's like icing on the cake. Here are a few more shots and things that have been changed; This ice house was next to the Backshop but was too large to keep so it had to go. This older, smaller style icing station is now in the spot where the larger building was. The Backshop has been moved and in it's place is the car/gas-electirc repair building. More on that later. Here is the general layout of most of the structures now. The transfer table and car/gas-electric repair shop are behind the coaling tower. The Roundhouse office, forge, and boiler shop are behind the roundhouse.
John, Sounds like it's time to schedule another visit?? I'll be at the convention on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. With the Rio Grande Modeling and Historical Society. May NOT have any one else available to help me though, so I may not be able to see much. Will be on Burnham Tour Thursday morning though! More pics and hopefully, some video footage this time.
Given that John's layout is on the tour... [warning: shouting coming] DO NOT MISS IT. [secure from shout warning] I was honored to be a guest of the RGW during a business trip back in 2003.
I'm busy trying to add more and get things in shape for the convention. So much to do and so little time. here are a few more photos of how the roundhouse is shaping up; One of the reasons I wanted a smaller roundhouse was to allow for more storage tracks so that the locos could be seen. I have a numbering system for different types of locos. Another view. One more; This is from inside the roundhouse looking out to the turntable. Next I will have some shots of the new sanding tower and the area on the other side of the coaling tower.
Here's a few more changes; The first photo is the old bridge that went down to the ice house. I was never happy with the bridge because the way it was skewed to make the curve never looked right so I decided to straighten it out and add a second leg that went into the yard. The new version. The oil tanks have also been added. New location for car repair facilties; This new location allows this view from the edge of the layout.
