Tried a different computer. Got an error message again. BUT, I tried again, and the second time, purchase went through. And, second car purchase went through, no problems. Both show up on card account, so I guess that's good news! One car to run/weather and one to put on display!! Now, the waiting begins!!
I've been hoping some of TrainBoard's n scale regulars will be researching who and where the Missouri-Illinois' bigger shippers were located on their system. I can conceive of believable return routing loads from Portland OR, Seattle/Tacoma, Winnipeg woo woo woo, Duluth MN, Minneapolis/St Paul to the St Louis area. But what Missouri-Illinois shippers sent carloads North and West?
Since I model New Hampshire, I am going to use the car for outbound rolled newsprint and inbound canned goods/beer/etc. I dont have a papermill on my layout so outbound loads will simply be in the general manifest on through trains, inbound loads will be received at a freight house as less thaqn carload for local grocery stores/markets. This will probably lead to some custom painted box trucks...
The M-I apparently did a fair amount of coal business. The ORER for July 1963 showed 2199 cars on the roster, of which 347 were hoppers. Interestingly, and I didn't know this until I looked up this listing, another 992 of their cars were described as "Hopper, All Steel, with Steel Roof" ! They were given AAR Classification LO, which translates to "Covered Hopper." The M-I also had a few container cars which were equipped to handle dolomite or lime according to the listing. I wonder if those were what was carried in the "hoppers with steel roof"?
RRPictureArchives has photos of a couple of different MI LOs, including one that's similar to BLMA's recently announced model, and the IMRC 3 bay / ribbed. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsList.aspx?id=MI
True enough, thanks for the citation. The MP Color Guide has some similar photos. The 704100 is probably the most interesting to me as it has "drip rails" to try to protect the road number and ACI Label. According to the Color Guide cars with those "drip rails" were used in cement service. I'm not sure that any of these strike me as "hoppers with roofs" though.
Not that it really helps with this car, but the M-I was most heavily involved in coal from southern Illinois and lead from Missouri.
Re: The MI boxcar, if I missed it somewhere in previously, then I apologize, but this thread has grown too large and too quickly to keep up with. My question is, will the special run consist of the car in it's original scheme (from what era?), or in one of the more modern "patched out" versions as seen in so many pictures shown here, or has this even been decided yet? Hi All, I found some info here http://cs.trains.com/trn/f/111/t/154186.aspx on the Missouri-Illinois. There is a very long post about 1/2 way down the page that has some info on the type of the loads and the customers the railroad served. Gary
I believe it will come in the as painted new in 1962 scheme. If one wants to run it as it would have looked in the early 70 they may have to at least weather the heck out of it and maybe add some patches.
It has been noted here, wondering about our seeking additional information for this car. Yet bet we are! Every tidbit we can find, any little note posted in this topic. It's all adding up. So please keep it coming!
I just found these decals under a pile on my drafting table. I forgot I even had them. I bought them for the I-GN lettering but they also have the MISSOURI - ILLINOIS lettering. Would have saved me a lot of piecing together letters.
I'd certainly vote for the as-delivered scheme, being that I model 1963! A renumbering would be needed for sometime later than that as part of the MP's general system renumbering. I have not come across a more specific date for that beyond "the 1960s" but it was definitely after the car was delivered. A roster as large as the MP's would take a few years to be completely renumbered so a very precise date for these specific cars might be difficult to come by.
Well... despite the probability that this will be a 1970's version as opposed to an early 1960's version... I ordered one last night. I've been a supporter of Trainboard for a long time and in addition to simply sending $$$... at least we will be getting a model of an actual rail car. I've paid as much for some rolling stock without any other benefit... this is a good way to help keep Trainboard going. I hope that there will be others that will set aside the differences with era, location and any other issues and look at this as a way to support this great model railroad resource.
