I bid on a brass ATSF 4-6-2 on ebay and won it. I got it for the tender, but it sits up a little high. Should I use it or try and get one lower? I can always use the trucks on another one if I have too.
Jerry, is the tender off the old Jamco Pacific??? That would explain the size; first brass steam in N from way back when... The engine looks GREAT! Otto
Yes, thats the one Otto. Actually for its age its a really nice model. Was going to Ebay the engine, since I just wanted the tender, but after running it around awhile it kinda grew on me. LOL
Jerry, couldn't you use the tender truck side frames to make a mold and cast some resin side frames and build the truck from brass? Since your brass engine runs so well, you might keep it intact and perhaps make some improvements where necessary. When I was still building in H0 I used brass sheets for a lot of things and was quite happy with the results. Still have try this for N scale.
After much EBay searching and kitbashing, I think I have come up with the tender. A new member of the Coosa Valley N Scale club thats been working on the clubs layout in my garage thought he had a slightly larger tender then the original Bachmann one I had. We traded some equipment and I ended up with the tender. First I removed the coal load and added the oil bunker and toolboxes. Drilled holes and added wire on top and a vent pipe. Took 3 axle trucks off a Bachmann vandy tender and added them. I had to file the tool boxes between the trucks to get everything to fit. Modified one of the trucks ends so I could body mount a MT couple on the end. (Basically cut the coupler off the truck and glued it to the body after some filing on it. Light couplings with this locomotive till I get a better fit with a screw!) Removed the WESTERN MARYLAND lettering and logo and just finished painting it a couple mins ago. Going to let it dry, hit it with glosscoat, decal, hit it with dullcoat, and it will be done. Pictures to come later.
It’s absolutely breathtaking. Oh my, it’s absolutely beautiful and in the photo it looks like the real thing. I’m just so amazed. cool: Great Job
Here's the photo that got me wanting to do a ATSF Mountain. This is the real 3713 blasting through my home town of Antioch CA. The cannery where my Nana worked is to the left behind the locomotive, and the passenger station can be seen in the background. A really great shot!
