I have started relettering and renumbering a Con-Cor SP U50 I won on EBay. Big freight trains are going to run on the Pinole Line, and I need good, big power.
UP isn't the only railroad that had BIG power. Once detailed, this will be a very nice unit. Anyone else detailed one of these? If so, how about a picture.
Lookin' good JD! I found some proto pix on this site, http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ Here's a couple of cool ones, check out that huge fan behind the cab! I heard these were nicknamed 'whirly-birds' bet that's just what they sounded like too! BTW there were a couple of pix of the 9550 on that site.
Nice pictures! I looked at cutting the screen out and doing something like the blowers, but it would take some cutting of the frame, and I don't want to do that just yet. Maybe later.
The biggest modifications I am going to do is on the front end. Add the door, lights, MU hoses/cable, grab irons. That should give it the 'correct' SP look.
When I look at locomotives like this, it always amazes me to think that someone, (or several), sat down and drew the lines for a locomotive like this, and then built this monster. Awesome.......just awesome!
That is a nice looking Locomotive, have fun with it. You can definitly tell witch ConCor units were done by Kato. Kevin
I don't think I ever realized how ridiculously tall those things were until I saw that picture with the F unit trailing...
Have not started mine, but I have thought about modeling the blowers/screens etc...also looking at ways to repower the old Kato mech.
OC, do you have the UDE light for it yet? Was wondering because im looking for a similar high mount UDE "cobra" style, for a U30C. I can't seem to find one. And I swear I have seen them somewhere for sale. Thom
Those things are awesome! Might have to come up with a reason to get one of those for my modern-day layout someday. :hmm4er: Russ
My SP U50D made in Oct, 2000. I really need to rework the details. It is a good runner with lots of added weight. I originally added the weight for NTrak running. I will venture the opinion that this 9952 was the highest engine number Espee ever had.
Kato Made? Kato vs Who? Which are better and when were they made? The ones Hemi (see his post above) did for me are the orriginals - 20+ years old.
At one time Kato made stuff for ConCor. I thing they made the U50, Turbine, S2 Northern, Hudson?, and some other stuff. At some point they parted ways and ConCor bought the tooling. It was the same thing when kato made stuff for Atlas. Kevin
Thom, I am using Sunrise Enterprises N-619. I just mounted it today and got a picture but RailImages is down for maintanence right now. As soon as I get back from work and it is up I'll post a picture. Jerry
Flash - your photo is almost an exact replica of the 2nd proto shot that 2slim posted - same road #, same lashup, old boxcars and building on the right, yard in the background - coincidence or did you stage it from the photo? Either way, way cool!!!
