It can happen fairly quickly. I remember cars going out brand new, which were returned within a few weeks or a month, already "weathered". Inside and outside. And some coming back on flat cars or in gondolas. I remember one small batch which was wrecked the next day.... Rail cars see some rough use.
It used to be that I never put a car on the layout without doing some sort of weathering. Must be slipping in my older years.
An Accurail D&RGW 50 foot boxcar. The minimum I do on Accurail cars is to paint the underframe and truck sideframes, but I often also weather the roof, as I did here.
I am not in favour of very dirty cars, but they do need some light weathering at least, to look realistic. A very dirty, beaten up car here and there is fine as it adds interest (if well done). Alan www.andersley.co.uk
Since I model modern, I have the reverse. In particular for the boxcar fleet. Beat up, rusty and graffiti looks real. Light weathering is a lie.
A couple of years ago... MR did an article about weathering. The author suggests that "HIS" way is the "correct" way to weather cars. I call BS!!! IMHO... one can weather the car any way they want. Light, heavy, full of rust and holes, Shiny like just off the assembly line. Any way they want!!! You can find many proto pics on the internet for anything you want to do with a railcar. Hell, I once saw a fence(in real life) that was just a chain strung from concrete blocks about 3 feet cubed. Imagine the crap one would get if they put THAT fence on a model RR. LOL! JMS
My 1st HO purchase. A simple starter set, but includes the Bachmann DCC controller I wanted, and a Loco with sound. $166 + $13 shipping:
I would show mine but it (a 2-6-6-2T) is in transit right now from NY and my sd70ace hasn't come in yet from CO so I sit and wait. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
And another one joins the dark side!:cute: I went the Dynamis route on my switching layout, I haven't regretted it. Welcome to the board.
I went with what I thought was going to be the easiest to operate for my 7 y.o. Grandson. I have enjoyed just testing out the new engine, and cant wait to buy another engine.
Jim, my 5 yo grandson is learning switching on our layout. He is getting way better these days, even with momentum on the locos. We have a blast, I'm the breakman/conductor, he's the engineer. He hardly runs over me these days! LOL Im starting to think DCC and sound will lure them back into the hobby. have fun with your new layout!
Found another E7 for my 20th Century Limited consist. So far the train is not a perfect 20th. But I'm at 12 cars in 1948 color scheme. Mostly Walthers, some Rapido. Engines are BLI. But anyway, heres the motive power. 4000 is the "New" one.
I picked up an undecorated Mantua 2-6-6-2T this past week. Looks like I need to do. A couple tweaks. The front knuckle needs help and looks like the headlight on the front could use a little glue. Other than that I gotta do some decaling. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
new loco on the Dorking Garden Railway Needing a loco which represents my home area (in Surrey, England), a friend found for me this Bachmann Mogul, an N Class design dating from 1917 which was still to be found in service in the late 1950s or even beyond. Looks good on the Dorking Garden Railway (search for Dorkingian on YouTube):
