Jim, standby for what I hope will be a barrage of photos from some of the guys who have been posting articulated photos on another thread. Shays are the original subject, so we thought we should put it here on NG and SL. This is Prineville, Oregon's own Mt. Emily Lumber No. 1 doing a photo runby. [IMG]

Fitz and 7600EM_1 ... thanks for the neat photos. I was not aware that Prineville had a railroad. I've been there only once and did not notice. Looks like the fireman of old #1 needs to cut back on the oil going into the firebox :D

Here's one of Mt. Rainier Scenic Shay No. 11, taken at railfan day a few years ago. John, a FOUR truck Shay? That's the first one I've seen. Bill, yes there are rails in Prineville and a dinner train that runs between Redmond and Prineville. [IMG]

    Fitz,
Yes thats a 4 truck Shay.... It was unsucessfull to the Western Maryland though..... For its size was no more then the 3 truck Shays they had...... Then they got smart and had the last and largest Shay ever made in 1945.. the Western Maryland #6 it was rated as a 3 truck 162 ton, and had 48 inch wheels.... Was a real puller to climb the grades in West Virginia... That would have been the Durbin and Elkins area.. Steep mountains on all sides....... :D A well needed loco and a well liked, photogenic loco at that.... And today its still in steam at Cass WV.. On their scenic railroad... :D And looking as good as can be! :D

John, here's the Roaring Camp and Big Trees No.1, "Dixiana" in Felton, CA. Sure are a lot of Shays with the number ONE. She's just a little two-truck. [IMG]

Well, here's a coal burner, 1925 from Jim Wrinn's Spencer shops in North Carolina. Taken at Railfair 99 in Sacramento, CA. This engine is a long way from home. They had a race between her and Mt. Emily No. 1. [IMG]

Bill, me too! I've seen a lot of Shays, but never a four truck. John, both of the Shays at Railfair were three-truck. (As I said there are many with the number 1). Mt. Emily Lumber No. 1 from Prineville, Oregon, an oil burner, vs. Graham County 1925 from North Carolina, a coal burner. One is a 70 tonner the other a 90 tonner, and unfortunately I can't remember which is which. The FRA came unglued when a race was proposed, but finally relented and let them run time trials, one at a time, rather than side by side, which would have been a hoot (no pun intended) since top speed is about 15 mph, but with lots of smoke and noise. Graham County 1925 won both heats. Here's a shot of both from the "clean" side. Interesting side note, Martin Hansen is the regular fireman for No. 1, and a nice young lady named Jean was the fireman for 1925. [IMG]

And a big bulky looking Shay... a 3 truck 160 ton.... I have no idea why it registers 160 ton to the largest at 150 ton and actually the Western Maryland was 162 ton and in the 150 ton class..... Anyway here it is... :D
