And bringing up the rear...... Sorry for the picture quality....train was picking up speed! And that completes my roll-by of a very beautiful, and famous train......
Jerry, nice, thanks for the car by car shots...great train! Amazing how much "life" the figures add. Love your green Northern California scenery, too.....you have more trees in that one scene that I will have on the entire layout! Well, I do have an orange grove, does that count? Otto
Jerry, I wish my roll by looked as nice. Otto, Any trees, espeacially orange groves counts. There was a time Cajon Pass was sparsley covered with trees. Not so much anymore, to many fires. Thanks
Well, my reaction was 'darn' just on the price, and 'double darn' when I tried to look up Look Model and see that their website is no longer up. I still had half a mind to buy his California Cars at some point. What would a good alternative be? Taking an old Bachman full dome and doing a lot of work on it?
I tried looking him up too and cant find a trace of him. His California cars were very nice. I would say the Bachmann car would be the best bet, and with a little work, it would be a nice model.
Here is my Bachmann full dome with some minor modifications. I painted it aluminum, to get rid of the Amtrak theme, lettered it with Santa Fe's passenger car decals, painted the interior a gun metal gray, removed the Rapido Couplers and added MTL's knuckle couplers. No figures yet as we are just deadheading the train. Sigh! It isn't near as nice as Jerry's. Don't you know, I wish I had taken advantage of purchasing one from Look Models. Oh well, it is what it is. Besides, at the time they were available, I had a railroad to build and it was maxing out the preferred budget.
or.... Roberto Martari's (M&R sides) beautiful etched sides over a Bachmann or American Limited core kit.... Bruce models built by Mark Jirousek
Mike Skibbe did a nice article on the SF Chief for Model 160 awhile back. http://www.model160.com/n-scale-magazine-features/workbench/santa-fes-san-francisco-chief/
As impressive as the train is, and it is, it's the photography and settings that blow me away! Wow! It nice to see some great modeling here! Otto K.
Wow, those non-Bachmann full domes are impressive. Glad I don't need one though! The actual ATSF cars (for the most part) have now migrated to the Iowa Pacific owned lines across the US including the San Luis & Rio Grande, and the Saratoga & North Creek. May be appearing on others. I rode on one up over LaVeta Pass on the SLRG, in the dome, was a wonderful day. Unlike the Pullman Standard short domes, these big domes are still very much alive and kicking and now in places where you can ride them. I'm glad to see somebody running it behind PA's. Everybody always asks about the Super Chief behind PA's. Remember the SF Chief took the Transcon (southern) route, didn't run Raton. So with a flatter run it used PA's up until PA's were pulled. If you want a classic, huge, ATSF streamliner behind PA's, with domes and hilevels, this is your baby.
