I noted the HO Scalers with Geep Fan at the throttle, is having fun with their discussion regarding the Santa Fe, San Francisco Chief. Let's have some fun of our own. Here' a prototype resource: http://www.snowcrest.net/photobob/sfp.html Followed by a slide show of a mixed bag of train cars that make up a close approximation to the 1X1 foot scale. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ltx22s_7BKY&feature=plcp Feel free to throw in with your replication. I'd love to see it. Oh, I know my layout is a mess to look at. Give me time and I will eventually get scenery installed. Heck, I got trains to run.
Here is mine.
Russell when you have time could we get an up close shot of the rear sleeper? The videos looks great Rick & Russell !!
Hawhaw oh my gosh. Well I think I just answered my own question. You'd have to see Jerry's thread http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?87641-ATSF-Line-Started/page474 to understand this comment. Good one Jerry, not bad.
Here's mine. I believe this is the same passenger car Russell used, minus the marker and drumhead. His may be lettered Santa Fe while mine is Pullman. This sleeper came in a four car Kato set of smoothsides, as previously described and seen here. Does that get it?
Guys, nice work! I'm sorry to say I don't have a SF Chief; it made a hard right in Barstow Have to settle for the regular Chief... Otto
Otto, Show us your "regular Chief" or El Capitan. By the way there are stories out there where the San Francisco Chief or trains of like destination, was or had to be diverted to L.A., due to flooding of the Mighty Mojave River, Barstow, Ca. Once in L.A. customers could catch SP for destinations west as SP looked at it. North as we see it. Two routes available 1., Up the coast and 2., Over Donner...oops....ahh...I meant Tehachapi. Allowing riders to get to their destinations. Sorry, uncertain as to date and time. There was a flood sometime after 1926 that may have closed the railroad bridge, a wooden trestle that extended across the Mighty Mojave River. Usually a under ground river but just not this time. I thought I had that written down in my notes and can't find it. Family that lived down near the station, in the mornings shadows of the north approach to the auto bridge, practically under the curve, they were flooded out. As was most of downtown Barstow. Wait Barstow is on a hill. True, but it wasn't back then. It was then located down where the original or old yard is known to be. I believe the Harvey House was under construction and the Santa Fe passenger trains consisted of heavyweights pulled by stoves. It would take a fire to force the buisness owners to move up and on the hill. The history is free but the rest of this you will need to pay for. I'll send you a bill...of lading. Grin!
I model 1977-2005, but I have considered modeling this train if I ever satisfy all of my other modeling wishes. haha Our club models Tehachapi though, so it would be a great train to have. I found this page a while back, it is a good modeling resource, but I would like to see others' consist lists to see if there's different ways of doing it. Obviously the train also changed over the years so there will be different choices there, too. http://www.model160.com/n-scale-magazine-features/workbench/santa-fes-san-francisco-chief/
Oh, okay.. Here's the El Cap at Pine Lodge. The Chief is under construction. Heck, everything in my trainoom is under construction... Otto KL.
Otto, The train, the scenery and the backdrop. For a second or two I thought you had stolen one of Chard Walker's pictures and then I realized by the tattle tale benchwork this is all yours. Some superb work and artistic ability showing here. Salute!
Here's a San Francisco Chief roll-by. . . . ATSF FP45 5941 was the lead unit on the last passenger train to leave Richmond, and the one I chose to model. It was followed by F45 5920 on this last run.
Next I have baggage and mail cars.... I'm using 4, but that number changes depending on my mood..... Mail is important to me, as my father retired from the Post Office with over 30yrs delievering mail.
Right now I am using 4 El Capitan cars, and thats just because thats all I have put people in so far. Once I get more cars filled with people I will add more.....you know holidays get busy!!! Santa Fe passenger cars are just a basic silver....but look so cool.
