Darren, your photos are bringing back long-forgotten 60-70 year old memories of towns that my folks drove through visiting relatives in upstate NY. This was back when US-20 and similar highways were still two-lane country roads going through the center of small towns such as Sharon Springs. Thanks

One of the biggest reasons Lisa allowed me to track down so many of the depots is that we would get to travel down so many back roads of Upstate NY thought many small towns. When you realize how many places we got too in such short time and plot them on a map you can see we traveled allot of miles during this trip just to get these simple photos. Having a forum to share them again with my friends brings back allot of wonderful memories for me as well...

Darren, what Hank said. I had forgotten some of those towns since I left there 51 years ago. Wish I had paid more attention to the railroads back then. Anyone remember how to pronounce "Schenevus?"

Jim, I'll see your "Schenevus", and raise you one Cazenovia, the last time I saw a Lehigh Valley teakettle steaming north along Chittenango Creek towards Onieda.

How to tell a midwest person from a New Englander:

    Town in MA: Worchester

    Midwesterner: Wor-chest-er

    New Englander: Woo-stah

Regarding the old main roads, I think that is why I bought Jess my Jeep. Driving her or any vehicle really on an interstate is boring at best. Driving through small towns and seeing all the neat road side attractions is part of the fun. Some of the best places to stop and eat was on the road less traveled.

    "Murder the name RS"

Being from Colorado our western ways of saying things makes the pronunciation of the Eastern names even worse. I think folks would be shocked in finding out how many dialects are spoken in the US let alone languages. With all the mixture of people that make up the US population from centuries of imaginations from all over the world plus toss in the various Native American languages and dialects you can almost tell from which part of the US someone is from given their accent. I know folks in the Greater NYC Area that say they can tell from which city district someone is from based on how they talk as people from Queens talk different then those from the Bronx, etc.

We had an exchange student live with our family several years ago that was from Switzerland / Spain and she knew I spoke some German. She spoke I believe 15+ languages fluently along with various dialects. When she sneezed I said "Gazuntight" and she thought I was speaking German just for her sake and was shocked to find out that we used various German words as if they were normal English. See, her English training was in the Queens English so her getting introduced to American English with it's variations was part of why she wanted to live in the US for a year. When we introduced her to some of our friends from California and Boston it truly started to sink just how divers the US is. She could also tell as you headed south the more Spanish influence there was, north the more French influence, east the more European influence, and west the more Asian influence. Then when she got introduced to the Native American influence she truly was thrilled.

So, how one "correctly" pronounces a City / Street all depends on the knowledge of where the origins of that name came from in the first place...

Same here. In Maine, the 2 foot fans know Saco as "SAW-koh"

In Montana, we know it as SAY-koh.

In many places it is naturally assumed that Garcia is gar-SEE-uh. But on the Milwaukee Road in western Washington, it was always "GAR-shuh".

Wow I would love to live at that Depot in West Chazy NY. Is that track still active today? Is it CP?

The West Chazy Passenger and Freight Depot are privately owned and the Passenger depot is a private home. I got permission to go onto their property to get these and other photos. Yes, I believe the line is still active under CP

I see a Hi-Rail and an Amtrak sign at the Willsboro station but no track. Is the track behind us in this picture?
