It is interesting - and fun - to pore over maps of the USA, down the mid-west from Canada down through the Gulf - the old French Louisiana - and see how many French town names are seen.

Des Moines (some monks), Detroit (strait), Trempealeau (dunk in water), Fond du Lac (bottom of the lake), Baton Rouge (red stick), Coeur d'Alene (Alene's heart)... and more!

Gee, I wonder which railroad company previously owned that SD45.

Parts of Minnesota are heavily of French lineage, too.

My last name is spelled Gosha and is almost universally pronounced Go-shah or GOSH-ah, both incorrect. My great, great grandfather and his family moved to the United States from outside of Montreal and was French.

The last name was originally spelled Gaucher and when they moved to the Rockford IL area, the authorities deemed the spelling should be changed to make it easier for Americans to pronounce (yeah, right).

So, the pronunciation is Go-SHAY. What's odd, though, is I am actually more German, due to the marriage thing and all that.

That means left-handed. The opposite is droitier, pronounced drwah-tee-ay, for right-handed.

I knew a kid named Gaucher back in the 1970s, IIRC in high school.

A town in south Mississippi is also pronounced GO-SHAY, though spelled GAUTIER. On the other hand there's a town nearby that's spelled SAUCIER, but pronounced SO-SURE. Go figure. LOL

That's amazing to see vestiges of GM&O paint in 1991. So cool.

I think this is an MRS 1 US Navy USN 65-00543 in the old yard at Sacramento 25/04/1998

One day I'll photoshop that stupid pole out!

Anyone know if it still exists?

The initial order for SD45s from the C&NW were the only SD45s ordered without dynamic brakes.

    Rat's nest? Insane electrician's folly?

I saw a GP30 once on the Canadian Pacific back in the 1970s - one of only two the CP had - at the head of a huge train with four other locos and two more as mid-train helpers.

Unique experience, both for my one and only GP30 sighting and the big honking train that every kid dreams of! :)
