My employer often worked business meetings at a waterfront hotel in the Tidewater area of Norfolk. We had a grand view of activities at the Naval air station, including fighter aircraft landing at the airbase. It was hard to concentrate on business matters with so much cool stuff happening outside the window. :)

A few photos from my trip through Tokyo Terminal to Hiroshima. This is from inside the E233 “Special Rapid” (Express commuter train) on the Chuo Line going into Tokyo near Shinjuku station. My train crossed over the red one (Shonan-Shinjuku line) as it crossed a canal alongside cherry blossoms.[IMG]

Visited a LHS in Hiroshima. They modeled the old Hiroshima Prefecture Industrial Promotional Hall (now known as the A bomb dome) on their layout.

Great photos from Japan! Thanks for sharing all that.

What's remarkable about the cab photo is the engineer sitting straight at his controls, looking more like an airline pilot. You can tell he's proud of his job.

I saw something on TV perhaps a year ago that showed Japanese railway personnel engage in a process known as "pointing and calling". In an example, the Engineer points directly to each and every signal and verbally calls out its indication. It helps to focus attention and assure vital aspects of safe operation are paid close attention to.

Having had Oriental employees, this is a matter of pride for their profession, "face" in their culture. They do their best within their capabilities, letting nothing distract them from their performance and perfection. It was admirable, something I could rely on without question. Losing "face" was unacceptable.

I’ve seen the pointing every time I’ve been up front. I can’t tell or hear if they are calling through the partition.

I took a bunch more prototype photos of things-track, crossings, and a few of other trains that didn’t come out. I’m not going to post them so I don’t monopolize this forum, but if there is anyone who models Japan and would like a photo of something in particular, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do. I’m here for another 2 1/2 years, so if it’s not near me in Tokyo, chances are I’ll come across it eventually.

Saturday evening this used and abused unit was setting and waiting to pull east, PIC_0619.JPG

And yesterday morning, another DIT EMD was eastbound on an H train,

Which I was able to get on video later at lunch time,
