There's a different form of bumper at the end of each track.

From almost exactly 42 years ago on 03/24/1979, PH&D 2016 weathers a spring snow in Barrington, IL. Built by FMC in Portland, OR, stenciling shows "NEW 10-77".

This morning, Wyomissing JCT, on the NS Harrisburg Line. The trailing unit on 294 shows the effect of many miles of service. DSC07428.JPG

The Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line is a 50/50 NS and CSX-owned shortline serving its namesake Virginia cities. It leases motive power from NS, but painted one unit in a 1960s heritage paint scheme. This is NPBL 5260 crossing a tributary of the Elizabeth River. The wood trestle nut in me was loving this area! Photos taken from Elizabeth River Park. It's a great place to watch action, as a large lift bridge is just across the park, overlooking the river and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

My Atlas A1G PHD car (viewable on George's A1G site) has the same scheme. Of course, it's just a plain old 40 footer with a roofwalk.

    :D

I like the outside braced cars.

That's a little ol' "Prairie", isn't it. it must have been pretty old even in 1942.

I believe it is a 2-6-0 Mogul. What appears to be the trailing truck on the locomotive is the first axle of the tender. The railroad was scrapped soon after that photo was taken. Here is a much earlier shot of another Mogul (or possibly a ten wheeler) before it was converted from coal to oil. The railroad sported the only tunnel in Texas and the coal smoke was a problem till the conversion.

Of course. If I had looked closer. I would have seen those wheels are too far back to be a trailing truck.
