What is your layout all about? Scale, era, part of the world you model?, Why you chose the period, place and scale you did?? I am in N, because my 4-year-old said he liked the "little guys" [IMG] and modeling the Santa Fe because I had an N scale layout years ago that ran Santa Fe, so we are reusing what is left of motive power and rolling stock...plus I like the Santa Fe (who can resist that Warbonnet??). The period is a no brainer...mid-50's so that I can run steam and diesel. I have set the layout up as a branchline that can also run earlier equipment from the 20's, 30's, and 40's ( hand me downs from the main branches). Would love to hear what you have and why!! Happy Modeling!!

N scale, fall of 1998-2000, West Virginina USA, I liked the big round mountains that I'm born and lived my whole .ife in and in the same state and I chose N scale so I could utilize more room for trains [IMG].
The A&A has several Hand-me-downs from the Chessie system, and You can still find a Chesie SD9 or a couple ex B&O GP7s although you can also find SD70MACS and C40-8"G" s. Hey it's free-lancing ain't it?? [IMG]

I guess us Moderators go first.
WELCOME TO GRIDLEY, TEXAS. LOCATED ALONG THE Burlington Northern Santa Fe-Aransas Odessa & Western AND Union Pacific (SP/MP-TP) RAILWAYS.
The Time: Current Day. The scale: N. The layout is two N-Trak modules. The track plan is slightly different than what you see here. The crossovers from the Red to Yellow Lines are moved "east", in front of the Amtrak Depot. The Yellow to Blue crossovers have moved "west" across from the location of the Red to Yellow crossovers. The Engine and Car shops have recently changed a little but not enough to really change the appearance of the track plan.
In N-Trak, the RED and YELLOW lines are the MAIN LINES and BLUE is the BRANCH. However, at Gridley, The BNSF-AOW double-track MAIN is the BLUE and YELLOW lines. The UP has the RED line, which in this case is the "BRANCH". UP serves the Gridley Grain COOP and Interchanges with the BNSF-AOW. The tracks in front of the Amtrak Depot are really running North-South but at that location, they run true East-West. "West" of town, the tracks swing back north towards San Antonio and further up track the UP swings back west away from the BNSF-AOW. Heading East, the UP swings under the BNSF-AOW as they turn south once again towards Corpus Christi (all that is a "later" project") The Abandoned Rock Island used to cross at grade "west" of the current Amtrak Depot. When BNSF-AOW put in the new Locomotive and Car Shops, the diamonds were removed. Some track still remains through the Industrial Park on the westside of Downtown Gridley. A "Rock Island Yard" can be added off the back of the 4 ft. straight module for some more "switching fun", but I haven't used it for a few years. I may start using it again soon, but I'll have to relocate my current "control pit". Look throught the rest of this and the N-Scale forum for more information and pictures of my "Gridley Modules".
I chose N-Scale because I can do more in less space. Not only that, I was in Baton Rouge, LA. when I changed from HO to N. No basements in an Apartment or House in Baton Rouge, unless you like to model ships! [IMG] [IMG] I like Modern Railroading best and N-Scale is the best scale for that too.

HO scale. Loosely based on southern tier of the erie railroad between Hancock NY and Port Jervis NY. I dont have the time to be prototypical so I model as I see fit. I live a mile from Narrowsburg NY which gives me access to the old main and a feel for the flavor this once great RailRoad had. I am a big fan of the erie and especially erie lackawanna. I also have easy access to Scranton PA and the steamtown historic site for some added inspiration. Ironically I lived in Highland Mills NY till I was 11 and fondly remember hanging around the old Graham line of the EL. We used to place pennies on the track and when the trains would roll by I remember how impressive those diesels were. My Family moved to Narrowsburg NY in 76 as the EL sadly came to an end. First Conrail came along and now I get to see the Norfolk Southern trains rolling through. It truly doesnt matter now who rules the rails as long as the trains keep on rolling through this historic country side. ps:The era I Model is sometime in the fall 1968-1976 .

1978 to present time. The GVR has bought the the Conrail/NS line from South Bend,Indiana north through Grand Rapids,Mich.on up into the northern part of Michigan, and has aquired trackage rights on CSX to Port Huron/Sarnia Ontario where the GVR interchanges with the MAT.

As Catt mention, the interchange between the GVR and the MAT is now a fact and we are both free lancers in N gauge. Both of us have had posts about our railroads in this forum previously

The Saline, Ann Arbor & Yuma Railroad(SAY-RR)is an HO layout based on the Ann Arbor RR in 1964- the time period when the Wabash sold it to the DTI RR- thus I can operate FA's in Wabash blue as well as GP-35's in DTI orange. I use the SAY name to allow myself a little leeway with industries and any extra motive power as the Annie at that time had 10 road engs (FA's & GP-35's), 2 RS-1's, and 3 Alco S-3's. I model the entire line from Toledo, Ohio to Frankfort/Elberta, Mich including the ex NYC Saline Branch. My 14 year railroad is an operation type layout using the card-order system although a computer type program is in the works. A normal operation session consists of 6 people working for 4 hours. One of the guys just got a new camera and took pictures over Christmas time and those can be viewed by checking out the following : www.stclairc.on.ca/people/pages/kgarber/railroad/SAY

The Rocky Subdivision of the Union Pacific Railroad, set post-SP merger (1995) to present. Primary traffic is intermodal and coal (just like the real thing). Layout is a 4x8 set in the foothills of the Rockies. Bigtime railroading, C40s, C44s, SD60s, etc.

Plan for when I get my own house is a free-lanced railroad based on the Boston & Maine's Western mainline (Boston, MA - Mechanicville, NY) in the modern times. I will take Guilford out of the picture and replace it with my road. Power will be similar, a hodge-podge of 2nd generation equipment, with a few early GPs still kicking around.

Both of these are/will be in N scale

N scale. I model modern CSX so that I can have both CSX and Conrail equipment on my layout since CSX bought half of Conrail. It is loosely based somewhere in western Pennsylvania. I chose N scale because I think it makes a better "modern scale", since I can run longer trains and oversized equipment(autoracks,hi-cubes,etc) with ease.

I fixed your OOPS Dave. Also, it's good to see you making a post. That goes for everyone! [IMG]---Brent

Robin and Catt forgot to mention the new interchange agreement with the CEE Line also now gives them access to the Ohio River at Evansville IN. So the MAT, GVR and CEE Line go from the Ohio river to Canada.

Yea, the turntable is an old Atlas (20 yrs+), still does the job-just a little on the loud side but room dictated a turntable to fit in enough eng tracks.

My layout is the Augsburg and Concord Railroad, freelanced shortline in Central Illinois in the mid 80's. I model in N Scale because for many years we lived in an apartment, and if I was going to have anything, it was a shelf layout. I decided N-Scale was the way to go.

I forgot to mention that Larry Gilbert's CEE is in partnership with my GVR and Robin's MAT.We are also combining with Brian Schmidt's INRR and Helge's SR&WF railroads to reach all the way from Canada to the southern border of the US.This little group is called the North American Rail Alliance or NARA for short. There is at least one more partner road coming into the fold soon. [IMG]

JCater,All the railroads in NARA are still independant roads. We are simply a Co-Op of shortline railroads banding together to provide better service to our customers. We hope to have a system map soon showing all the roads involved . [IMG]
