Was working on the last pair of 20ton coal cars from RLW, when: That's what happens when you push too hard on the pin when you don't bore out the hole enough while installing trucks. (The kits are made for Nn3, but I'm using MT N archbars: worked / looks great on the other five!) The damage looks worse than it really is: only the base snapped, not the sides or ends, so should be able to put humptydumpty back together again. If not: More "character" (with more weathering & rubble) to the mine scene! Lemons into Lemonade! (coal into diamonds? hopper into frog prince?)
Here's a NS C40-9W cab I've been working on. I removed the original nose light and filled it in with styrene sheet. I then used a Detail Associates headlight casting for the new lights between the number boards. It needs a little bit more sanding before another coat of primer and the paint booth.
I've had this Heljan kit for quite some time, but since I scratchbuild my buildings, I didn't care anymore about building the kit. This weekend however, I've assembled the kit. With some paint on it, it has become a really nice building.
Been working on a station that I have been planning to scratch build since planning my layout began a few years back... Progress from today with the roof laid loosely on top... What it should look like when done....
Tony Hines: Very nice model. Good corners and a very complex roof. Did you measure the building? Is it still near the tracks? They don't seem to be in the picture. What is the building used for today? It is obviously in very good condition.
Flash, The tracks are behind the station in the photo. This used to be the B&O Ohio Division main line. I'm working from about 20 photo's, a couple actual measurements and the plot plan available from the county tax records. I have close up photo's with items of known dimention to measure off of plus I measured a brick and count bricks in some of the angles. The building is currently a runners accessory shop as the Pennsy line that crossed the B&O just to the right is now a "rails to trails" bike/running path. Here is a different angle from the time I am modeling. Another older shot from the other side. My big decision is what to do with the roof. I have Vollmer tile roof sheets to recreate the roof as shown in the earlier picture but sometime in the era I'm modeling, a shingle roof was put on it. To confuse things even more, just last fall, the roof was restored back to the tile roof on the real building and it looks real nice. The building was designed in Corel Draw and then the parts were scribed onto .015" styrene.
I think the tile roof would be more interesting. If it lasted into the era you model, then it sounds like a winner.
I've never posted here before. I thought my current project might be fun to show and tell. My first wood laser cut structure. So far, it's gone together pretty nicely. I'm amazed how well the stick-on pieces stick-on. It still needs it's roofing put on. You guys are doing some great stuff. Dan
the following pics are a WP GP40 and a SP GP40-2 the WP has been an experiment in making my own firecrackers and dynamic brake vent altering the nose to accept the mars light side view next page for more pics 4 pic rule
WP GP40 cont' the above pics are with the mars installed and the lower pics show the homemade firecracker and the 2 plastic stubs are plugs for the horn holes note frame mounted bell
Sp GP40-2 here are some in progress shots of my SP unit more pics next post and as you can see i'll be replacing the anti climber with one off an SD60 walkway
I am attempting to shrink down an HO scale AS-616 shell to N scale. In order to keep the quality of the surface details and to avoid large distortions, I will have to do this with at least three stages of Naphtha/RTV molds and no Hydroshrink. Here is the first stage reduction, ready to make the second stage mold. I will do the cab and battery boxes separately. I still have to figure out what to use for the frame and walkways. This is a lot more work than shrinking automobiles.
