Chris, that is very nice. I'd like to see more, but I can't seem to get your links to work for your trackplan and such.

So, I bought the book that helps you do a 40"x60" layout and make it grow.

It seems pretty good and I think I can get away with adding 16" inches to my width.

Here comes the next key question - the book suggests building a base on foam core. I have been looking at the blue foam board you would find at a Lowes.

Does anyone have a particular rationale for one over the other. Or maybe an alternative I am not thinking of.

    Many thanks.

I'm not sure why they did the foam core thing for this layout. Maybe just trying to be creative or extra light weight. Nevertheless you will not regret taking a more traditional apprach and either using plywood on a frame or, better, the blue foam board you've been looking at. The blue foam board only comes in 2 foot widths around here so if that's what you have you will need to glue two together and put some support under it. Quarter inch plywood would be plenty. Use a foam capable glue to hold it down. Liquid Nails has a couple of varieties that work with foam.

With the blue foam you can cut out some areas to create more relief below the track level for which the foam core approach would take extra work. You'll laso be better able to integrate this layout with something else you might build later.

If it were me, I'd go for the foam not the f

'not the foam core.' is the end of that last sentence.
