I also have the 30"x78" benchwork, and had layed down the track for the Unhinged and Horizontal when I realized that is not exactly what I wanted. Of course I am new to this and you are not : ) I now am cleaning out a space in the office to put the benchwork in and I am going to add an L-shape to the left side. Similiar to your plan where you have the future track. I also like to watch them go around when I am in the mode so I am basicly going to maake a return loop at each end. To muddy the waters up a bit here's another version of my Oklahoma and North Eastern II on Layout Depot. It takes up a 5-foot by 9-foot space along two walls.
