HI Folks; I have a pair of Kato Locomotives that have a non moving knuckle coupler on them, I was originally told they would work no problem with MT couplers. They work but definitely NOT no problem. So here is what I am wondering, is there a coupler conversion to MT out there OR, what do I do, cant have the train un coupling when ever it feels like it Thanks TIM
Try this page: https://www.micro-trains.com/index.php?_route_=n-scale/magne-matic-couplers If you follow "Downloads" on the top banner it will give you conversion charts for what a specific locomotive requires.
Which Kato locomotives are they Tim? Kato has sold locomotives with both semi-automatic and automatic knuckle couplers, but they have never sold a unit with "non-moving knuckle couplers." Perhaps somebody swapped the originals out for something else?
They are the P40FH and the SD90/43Mac -- Both were bought brand new -- the coupler is all one piece, and they will couple to MT but it is hard and they are not secure Tim
Mosr Katos use micro trains 2004 couplers, with an offset shank. I just installed some in an RS 2 and unless you're very very patient with fiddly coupler assembly, but the assembled ones. These are a much bigger pain in the butt to assemble than 1015s.
http://www.katousa.com/N/F40PH/index.html "All locomotives are equipped with body mounted KATO magnetic knuckle couplers." http://www.katousa.com/N/SD90MAC/index.html "Kato magnetic knuckle coupler" While they may not be what you were expecting, they are most certainly 2 piece automatic knuckle couplers. I understand that they might not couple to a MT as easily as another MT, but there is a trade off with that huge MT coupler.....
I’ve installed micro train couplers on a few Kato locomotives. It’s a pretty easy install to do. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
