hello all, i just wanted to show my progress on my little switching layout. track is done exept two sidings (dont what im going to do with them yet). a lot of first here first time using elektrofrog switches, first time wiring for DCC, first time putting ballast on the tracks, first time weathering the tracks, first time using undertrack uncoupling magnets (works really well) until now im really happy everything works great, my cheap life like loco runs really smooth and slow! over all of the track. none of this i could not do without asking for help here, there fore, thanks for the help here on the forum!!!! stevenb
Nice layout. I like the industries around the elevator, nice high buildings. Peco Electrofrogs are great, I use them, too, and would always use them again. Please keep us posted about your progress.
thanx christoph, now the fun part starts, putting all the industries and detailing. ill keep you updated. stevenb
That's a really nice switching layout, lots of possibilities. Good start with the industries, too. What are the layout's dimensions? Cristi
Nice switching layout stevenb. I'm glad it turned the way you wanted it. You might check my micro-layout thread at http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=100582 I agree 100%, using electrofrog switches is the way to go with a switching layout. I used Peco code flextrack and #6 ( medium radius ) electrofrog turnouts. I'm very satisfied with the result. I too have a Life-Like SW9/1200 ( TH&B ) engine. What a slow crawler. I had to replace the rapido couplers with Micro-Trains ones and use crazy glue to fix the brass contacts to the shell but after that treatment it runs nicely. One of my best engines perfect for switching work. Where did you get the background buildings ? I'm interested in building some low relief grain silos ( I'm modeling a brewery ). Could you please tell me what's the diameter of one N scale concrete silo ? Please post more pictures of your progress. Jacques
Nice looking track work Really nice. The track looks great. What is that in the middle photo where the switcher has uncoupled from the coal hopper? Is that an unloading pit? Is it a factory item or scracthbuilt? It looks cool. Take Care
I'm not sure about that. At first sight I thought that too but , just my opinion here, the lack of a runaround track on the right side ( industrial spurs ) might limit the switching possibilities. At least there is a small runaround track on the top left yard. Nicely done nevertheless. Jacques
Where did you get the background buildings ? I'm interested in building some low relief grain silos ( I'm modeling a brewery ). Could you please tell me what's the diameter of one N scale concrete silo ? jacques, the background buildings are from walthers. dimensons of the grain silo 160mm long 40mm diameter.
there is one runaround and thats more than enough (you have to think how to set up your cars hehe) for this layout witch is suppose to a time waister, not a saver anyway.
Thanks for the prompt reply stevenb. About the printed backdrop, I searched Walthers website, but it looks like their backdrops line ( they call it " Inastant Horizon Backdrop Scenes" ) is only for HO scale. Is it what you are using ? Jacques
Oh I see your point, you are the kind of person who likes to make life more complicated that it is already :tb-smile: I don't need to build any specific "Time Waster" layout because my wife always says that any model railroad related activity is a waste of time anyway. Just kidding here. Jacques
Don't HO scale backdrop buildings on a N scale layout look too big ? On the other hand the reverse works, some people use N scale backdrop buildings or N scale styrene structures on a HO layout because the backdrop buildings or the styrene structures are smaller and look further away. Jacques
more pics of the progress of last week.the grain elevator building is not quite done yet more painting on the top of the building and weathering of the steel shelters. thanks for looking! stevenb
