Very well put Hardcoaler! In my appearance on a local radio show some years ago for "Take Your Model Train To Work Day" (if you've read "The Coffee Pot Caper" that I linked in another thread, it's that one) I was asked about this. I compared it to coins, which are at least a little better known: for example, yes, they are valuable, but how many 1909S-VDB Lincoln Cents are out there? (484,000 were minted, who knows how many are left?) It's the same thing with trains. Also noted: I don't have an 1909S-VDB. (Or just a regular 09S for that matter. I collected as a kid and quickly hit the wall on the ten or so harder to get dates.) There are probably more Whitman Lincoln Cent folders than there are 09S-VDBs to fill them!
did you guys know there is a 51yr old French artist named Nebay? If you fat-finger it while you're typing into the search bar, it takes you to a bunch of venues where their work is posted, the artist's Instagram, heck even the history of the name itself at Ancestry.com. Know what you won't find? Train stuff, because it isn't Ebay.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/4055138836...EsZhPbZpVxbMnwuFW2g5B1CrKWD7usmJM-y-Xuc&gQT=2 These are out of production, yes, but can be found in minutes for about $300USD give or take. Stuff like this blows my mind.
I personally think Hardcoaler hit the nail on the head. I have a Con-Cor PA-1 A&B that my dad bought me before he passed away... Every birthday I put it on the track and run it around. It is noisy and the painting isn't crisp and is not as detailed as ones of today. It is big sky blue GN livery and was purchased for my birthday it was the last Birthday present my dad got me before he passed away. To me it is priceless not because it is such a great product but by the memories of the love of my dad.... Man, I had wanted that locomotive for over a year. So, my memories are not as worth as much to the next guy. My dad got me started when I was 6 with trains...and it has been quite a ride, we collected together till he passed. I'm now working on the layout we planned and never had the room for. I hope he is looking down from above and smiling and saying that Aboy! So it's not about the product it's the memories you have with your trains... That's my take on things.
For a couple old, cheaper looking plastic buildings, an $85.00 opening bid is really lacking in common sense. Also, I have know idea why they are designated as “Jim” Buildings, but would that really add value to them? https://www.ebay.ca/itm/23596184664...=2047675&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
I asked him if the price was right at $85 and was it supposed to be $8.50. He said it’s OBO and someone has a bid in for $11.50 for one and $9 for the other. Strange… that’s not how eBay works and it’s even against the rules you agreed to when you signed up.
Being that My Brother Happens to be a Former ModelRailroader ..S-SCALE, I find myself answering his questions about the hobby and $ whether if it is S-SCALE , ho-SCALE , N-SCALE to the other Model railroad Scales even if his 2nd Wife sees items on ?bay, He tells her ask Tom , he might know if it's worth it.. the $! Tom
All, I don't know about all of you here , I clearly see BACHMANN here - Not MINITRIX / WALTHERS !- if one scrolls to the last two photos. Granted the $25.00 seems reasonable. 1- Minitrix in Model Railroads & Trains for sale | eBay 2- Santa Fe #3500 Train Locomotive - N Scale - Minitrix / Walthers, Read | eBay 3- The Rock #4425 Train Locomotive - N Scale - Minitrix / Walthers, Read | eBay 4- C & O Chessie System 8210 Train Locomotive - N Scale - Minitrix / Walthers, Read | eBay 5- Burlington Northern #6474 Train Locomotive - N Scale - Minitrix / Walthers, Read | eBay Tom
Absolutely beautiful story, and spot on, Rockysgn. It's funny, as my father bought me a Con-Cor Great Northern PA/PB set when those came out in the 1980s. I still have them. Mine are in the Empire Builder scheme, and I think they are cool as heck. Are they prototypical? No. Are they top notch by today's standards? No. Do they have sentimental value to me? YES. Thus, they remain in the collection. Like you, I run mine from time to time, just to keep them going. Thank you for sharing that story.
The $ which People place on ?bay As for my post #10508 Here is the list as follows - 1- Santa Fe #3500 Train Locomotive - N Scale - Minitrix / Walthers, Read | eBay < EMD GP40 $25.00 2- The Rock #4425 Train Locomotive - N Scale - Minitrix / Walthers, Read | eBay < GE U36B $25.00 3- C & O Chessie System 8210 Train Locomotive - N Scale - Minitrix / Walthers, Read | eBay < GE U36B $25.00 4- Burlington Northern #6474 Train Locomotive - N Scale - Minitrix / Walthers, Read | eBay < EMD SD45 $25.00 What's next ? those Crazy READERS DIGEST models ... masquerading as Either ATLAS/ KATO or WALTHERS / Model Power or etc? Really $37.00 for this? I think I would buy a M/T's. Don https://www.ebay.com/itm/2359977111...Fmf49SqmuXN4eArxIW7nEItA==|tkp:Bk9SR-yYu56zZQ
I always find it fascinating when they come up with these weird numbers for prices. They must see it as some sort of gimmick.
Bachmann's "MSRP" is $34, and the listing has "free shipping." I suspect he just took the MSRP and added the cost for shipping.
While too much for what I believe is a couple of old Con-Cor's, what really cracked me up was "Locomotive & Passenger Car" in the title. https://www.ebay.com/itm/316494996922?_trkparms=amclksrc=ITM&aid=1110013&algo=HOMESPLICE.SIMRXI&ao=1&asc=264184&meid=17d3f1d0ad4b400aa1b54dfd57868999&pid=101196&rk=3&rkt=12&sd=235997711182&itm=316494996922&pmt=1&noa=0&pg=2332490&algv=SimRXIVIWithPreRankerShufflingAspectRecall&_trksid=p2332490.c101196.m2219&itmprp=cksum:31649499692217d3f1d0ad4b400aa1b54dfd57868999|enc:AQAKAAABEA7Ce8xvk2gRqFJuXvGltapV95a5coUmC3kbciUAKeszNX4A8IWe5JxJ5r%2BLRYQYzrYmpJW37Kr%2BepbwQQorJVcNC3QhDWYdE%2Bi5go0xqMt4R71r4fljvitqamgGTdikifvbSua9OdH9KD9%2BfBPbbMWBBdV1NsSZZNYgYaB2xOj0iQj1H7snQXPEMx3MuxdGgLiF1VDGaDAQ9vt5jep8DEshmQaTdxY438RpeY%2FLrzByR6vFg2OzqS4BFgIdO4ehXvXLTfK14E6vj3Fr9ULVF%2FDY0krsofYG2PKOLMS5tmOo0oh2Ygx2WQ%2FzHzz2fRLL4kfv9H0VX2tLcrxmEsxMoXgHNMAFCV2qCK81OPAqOQMH|ampidL_CLK|clp:2332490&itmmeta=01JPD7PKKWJCF7C90SY3RB7X3M
This just in... an anecdotal report that a certain Internet Auction Site loads verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry slowly, or stops completely, on a browser with ad and tracking blockers loaded. If accurate... sure, just make it harder to shop, ya'll...
After all of these years, I find it to be interesting just how mediocre their search engine still is.... The stuff it brings up when I try to search for something very specific, and use very specific terms. One of these days when I type in N scale, it will probably bring up women's winter boots.
The eBay search engine has no idea of what "Nearest first" is , , I either get USA or China. They are the two opposite extremes on postage , China is dirt cheap or free but takes forever to arrive and USA is waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy beyond anything reasonable and still takes weeks to arrive. The only sort of functional train related search that shows items for sale on this island is "model train" ............ and that is awfully vague resulting in 10 million Thomas the Tank Engine results.
