New Contestant for the eBay Follies Here's my nomination to the eBay Follies. $230 for a pair of IM F units? The last CB&Q F7B I got cost me less than $40 brand new. http://www.ebay.com/itm/N-scale-Int...343428?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item2a1913a1c4

That my friends, is one of the two groups remaining on Ebay these days.................."Retailers" that believe in price gouging & lunatics selling junk!! The days of it being a trading place for hobbyists, (as it started), are long gone. If it weren't about the only place left to get shed of my unwanted "odds & ends", I wouldn't go near it! Even at that, I don't any more than necessary..........I get tired of all the BS.
Sorry..........guess I do need to clarify.........I made it sound like that's all that's on Ebay these day........crooks & wierdos. Didn't mean to imply that. There ARE some good folks, it's just that the crooks are getting the upper hand.
I buy (a lot) and sell (some) on eBay and it has been my experience that the crooks and weirdos are the exception and not the rule. Sometimes (a few) people are ignorant of the value of their item or others (even fewer) are just boldface trying to get someone to overpay on something. That's why we bust them out here.
Not on eBay But Similar Okay, this isn't on eBay but it is similar. I was at the Train Show in Timonium, MD today and one of the regular vendors had a collection they were selling on consignment. The owner of the collection was asking $110 for a Gorre & Daphetid MT boxcar and $85 for a Krackel hopper. Are you serious? I laughed out loud when I heard that. Lots a luck trying to sell those at that price. I felt bad for the vendor as he had to try to sell these things at prices he knew he couldn't get. Andy Tetsu Uma
It's not that different to the guys you see selling junk at train shows (you know the ones I mean, it seems compulsory for every show to have at least one), some of them honestly don't know much about what they are selling while others are more dubious of nature. Like on eBay I usually walk past because I know what I'm looking at but I cringe when I see a newbie innocently paying more for an old Bachmann diesel than they would for a new Kato or Atlas one at the hobby shop down the aisle. eBay just moves age old practices online.
Yes - Train Shows - particularly the large 'G' shows on the East here - I have seen one dealer whom I have particular distaste for, as he takes the Life Like 'Blister Pack' of scenic details (more HO here than N) and cuts them apart - still sealed - with scissors, and reprices the 'cuttings' at almost the price of the full original blister pack! For example - this item http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/433-1619 Would be separated into 1-The Fork Lift, 2- The Drums & 2 Skids, & 3- The Crates. Then an outrageous price was placed on each separate item, which added up more than doubled the retail price of the original item - to me this is downright illegal, but then I'm just an old fart with better expectations I guess.
By the way - on ebay I am surprised at how many 'newer' sellers are putting statements about Insurance upon request, and denying responsibility if uninsured - Seems to me that one of my major arguments with ebay was when they decided to halt the option of adding insurance, and at the same time telling the seller that he/she is responsible for the safe delivery of the item - intact. What that means is the seller is now responsible to add at his/her own expense - insurance. As a seller, I myself would decide, depending on the item value, the means of the buyers address (Apartment - risky, House - not so risky) and such, and added Insurance at my own expense.
On valuable items, I just require insurance and add it into my pricing or pick up the shipping charge and brag "Free Insured Shipping." I sold a G scale 2-8-8-2 to a guy in France of all places and he paid the almost $140 shipping and told me how glad he was to get it for such a low price. Go figure.
super ultra rare super pricey http://www.ebay.com/itm/N-SCALE-KAT...658498?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item1e69b797c2
Considering MSRP on that was $95 and one sold on eBay last December for $88, it doesn't sound like this guy is living up to his eBay handle of "Big Discount Trains" It does sound like a worthy addition to the Train Board eBay Follies.
Yep, his sales do not match his ID very well! Most of his sales are like that, yet his feedback is good :worried:go figure. Here is another one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/N-SCALE-KATO-BN-SD40-2-EARLY-176-4802-ROAD-6363-BURLINGTON-NORTHERN-/170764424590?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item27c25a558e and it's doesn't even have a chip installed!
