I thought it might be fun to join the Marklin Club as right now my interest is in Marklin trains. Then I saw it costs $99 to join! I can't really see what that gets me besides a catalog and 6 magazines which may or may not be ad copy. And the chance to buy Marlin products before they are released to the general public. But it seems I would just receive coupons and actually make my purchases through my dealer. Which I would be doing anyway. So I'm not sure if this is a worthwhile thing to do. Has anyone tried it, or thoughts either way?
Hello. Welcome to the forum. FWIW. I let my subscription lapse ages ago. I did not find it very useful for US z scale modeling. It mainly covered European railroading and lots of HO trains. The articles were well written. I do not recall them having any advertising in them. That may have changed since Marklin restructured. I have a couple of binders of them. They are yours if you want to pay the freight. Jim in Boston
That’s cool, thanks for the offer. I decided earlier today to do it for a year as I know very little about trains and thought it might be fun. For right now I am interested in European trains and if the articles are how to build or detail layouts I won’t care what scale it is, I’m still getting ideas just looking at others work. Probably something I’ll enjoy now and skip later too.
It's been quite a while since I subscribed so I can't really comment, although "back-when" the articles were informative and useful. Have you checked out Greenberg's Guide to Z? Available on line at: http://www.guidetozscale.com/html/guide_to_z-scale.html Mark
As a free source of Z-scale European information I suggest Trainini on-line magazine. Historically in German nut it has also International (English) edition since 2018. http://www.trainini.de/
Wow, too cool. I see there is much to see about these z scale trains online. Greenberg's guide is really informative and the Trainini may give up its secrets a little more slowly, thanks.
You can get the English versions of Trainini at John Cubbin's Raildig site: https://www.raildig.com/introduction/trainini-magazine/ Also check out Contenental Modeller. Also in English buy electronic Subscription: https://peco-uk.com/pages/continental-modeller
Jeff you never cease to amaze me! I followed your link to the raildig site and clicked on the first Trainini magazine listed to find articles on the Japanese Shinkansen which I have ridden and the Boeing 737-200 which I have flown, how did you know? Where am I going to put a 737 or a Shinkansen train on my little Cortina layout? LOL The English make great enthusiast magazines for any hobbies. Subscription is quite expensive but lots of European stuff and free access to digital back issues makes it tempting. Thank you for the links.
Definitely start at home! We cover Marklin as well as all the Z scale manufacturers. Plus as a subscriber you get discounts on Ztrack Resale. That includes specials on Marklin items! www.ztrackmagazine.com Rob
You will find the Greenberg guide very useful . It is all about Marklin's track system and components. Keep your eye out for a couple of Marklin supplemental track plans and layouts booklets. They are items, 0292A and 0294. Lots of additional track plans with list of items needed, etc...Jim
I have been a member of Marklin insider club for a while (in addition to reading Trainini, ZTrack). The biggest value I get out of that is the annual car (in HO actually so my kids can play with it) and the special insider models in Z scale. As @zdrada69 knows I model both European and US railroads in various scales. Marklin Magazin has also good layout plans if you model European railroads and need to fit a layout in a small space or if you use Marklin digital electronics (Command Station, etc).
Thank. And bostonjim if the amount of old magazines is manageable I would pay you for shipping them to me in CA, zip is 94551. That was a nice offer. I'm pretty committed to European modeling right now, although the American stuff on a big track cannot be beat!
Let me weigh them and get back to you. There are only one or two articles I want to save and then I'll send them to you. Is it Mr. Freak? Jim in Boston
Here is what you will get if you want them. 62 editions of Marklin Insider from 1/1994 thru 3/2006. All are like new and were stored in binders. There are also 9 additional Marklin publications. Marklin Magizin and Marklin Magazin International. 3/2004 thru 7/2006. You will get 76 publications. Happy reading. They are quite heavy. They are printed on glossy paper stock. The latter publications are real magazines (70-80 pages each.) I'll ship them UPS ground. PM me. Jim
Look into using Media Mail. Slow but cost effective. Intended for printed matter such as these magazines. A 20lbs package is only $12 cross country. UPS will easily be $50 or so.
Thank you, Frank. Eric, I will ship them USPS to reduce your cost. It may take a bit longer to get there. Jim
Media Mail is fine I’m in no hurry. Thanks Frank. I tried to respond by email didn’t work. Where is the PM feature on this site? Is it a “conversation”?
