My rolling stock fleet is due for some auditing. Every car that hasn't been marked off in my database as having upgraded to body-mount couplers, NMRA-spec weight, and metal wheels is getting a top to bottom inspection and whatever improvement they need. Is it glamorous? Not at the moment. But being able to back a 30-car train through the most torturous trackwork it can find is pretty darn cool.
I wholeheartedly agree! Worth the time to set up the database and do what's needed to keep all those cars up to spec. I'm using an Excel spreadsheet to keep records, including coupler status, weight, if there's an associated storage box, etc. I find it satisfying to keep accurate data on all that, and converting rolling stock to Kadee couplers is a very Zen activity.
